The show has decent ratings and sales. Not amazing, but good enough, and that's how it works for renewing a second season. It's not like their production is incredibly high budget. Also, like any show, there is no monolith in how it is received. Majority of fans are happy on twitter about s2, but plenty are criticizing the last episode of this season and mocking it as well. Some of them are even the same people happy about season 2.

You can't compare Gundam ratings to card game ratings though, or kid-friendly ratings that haven't been heavily criticized. This is right before YGO, parents were horrified in the most retarded of ways of how "violent" IBO is, it suffered a lot of negative publicity and still sells just average like most other gundam series. Recent episode a shit, but many nips are at a con right now as well. Seriously most gundam series have an average, seed and 00 have been rare exceptions. Like I said, of course it can't compare to 00. Other than the "renaissance" that SEED gave out, 00 dd exceptionally well for a modern Gundam and is ranked by a lot of fans as the better of ones. Look, I'm not arguing that people love IBO or it's hugely popular, just that I know over here it's about average. Compared to many shows in the west where plenty of people watch and keep the show running, but plenty more people don't watch. It's just not surprising and it's not going to "ruin" anything. I feel like most of their scenes have been underwhelming and pretty standard subtext interaction, and I assume S2 will go that way as well. They're obviously at least friends now, and Yamagi will continue to worry about Shino and sometimes stare at him, and Shino will be nice to him, and that's about it.
