Magecraft as we know it and most magical creatures died off, and without spoiling too much the Holy Grail was taken elsewhere beforehand and is thus the last truly great source of mana left.
Most of the world is a cyberpunk dystopia wracked with war and controlled by the Harway family of mages, which Extra's Rin is a member of the resistance against (you find this out fairly quickly and it's mostly just irrelevant background info, don't worry)
Magic hacking is pretty much the only form of magic we know is still popular, though there are signs of other schools persisting.

If Caster does get an appearance I hope that she'll have a more mature design than in the games. One key part of her characterization has always been the fact that her cutesy act was very awkward and obvious, so everyone and their grandma immediately called bullshit and realized that she's actually a cruel and spiteful manipulator. I always felt that Wada's arc was too cutesy to catch that her genkiness doesn't actually mesh well with her appearance, unlike Takeuchi's original design, which made her seem both more mature and cunning.

Mooncell is basically the inner world of a TYPE though, its reality is just as real as Earth in the end. In fact Mooncell's reality spans across the entire universe apparently in CCC. You can consider it a second reality that overlaps reality. Things that happen in the digital reality effect the real world, kind of like Megaman Battle Network.
Things in the computer world can even manifest into the real world without any real trouble.

After that you can watch the Fate/Zero anime or read the Fate/Hollow Atraxia visual novel in whatever order you want - which are a prequel and a sequel, respectively.
Everything else is just a spinoff of those three works or a small, non-vital story expanding on the background/setting of them.

Mismanagement and misinterpretation. Ufotable's UBW is basically michael bay level of adaptation where most of the context or character depth is stripped away for sake of more explosions. Its hard to explain any other way - basically key characterization and lore moments are removedin favor of comedy antics being left intact, and then a lot of fights and events are altered, so if you only viewed anime you would come out of it with a far different message than the route carries and far worse opinion on characters(for example quite a few scenes are altered to make the main character actually look worse).
While some western fans are far more happy with it and defending it, Japanese merely thought it was okay and have taken up "wait and see" approach with HF movies.
