if anime sales greatly exceed manga/novel/game sales = make another season
if anime sales are on par or only slightly better than manga/novel/game = no more seasons unless they rarely don't mind the extra work going into making an entire season of anime for slightly more $ rather than leave the rest to the source material for slightly smaller profit that they didn't have to work for at all.

it's rare for a manga alone to self promote itself so successfully because people enjoy watching animated series. an anime released for it = the ultimate promotion and everyone would swarm to buy up all the merch they can get their hands on.
it doesn't matter if your anime and the success of its advertising is worth more than what the manga produced as a standalone, but it does matter if the fans are looking for more seasons.
