As long as you never give up and you keep pushing to better yourself, you'll make it no matter what. You CAN learn Japanese!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlCRfTmBSGs
I think it's easiest to teach by example. My dad didn't tell us to work hard; we just saw how hard he worked. I know I have shortcomings - like a short fuse - but I've learned you can't come home from a long day of work and snap at the kids.
Can we contact the mods somehow? I feel like this won't stop until they give a clear decision. If that kills the threads, then so be it.
Reminder that you'll surely become fluent!

So, I finally got around to putting those last touches on the guide and finishing things up.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H8lw5gnep7B_uZAbHLfZPWxJlzpykP5H901y6xEYVsk/edit?usp=sharing
It's a more compact version of the old guide, with a more extensive section regarding the various methods to learn Kanji. The resources have been moved to a separate document.
I also added some things to the FAQ and misc sections, so please take a look at those.
Please let me know what you think.
Unless there's some kind of overwhelming disapproval, I'll be replacing the current guide with this new version sometime in the next few days.
Happy learning.

The feedback form is more for site and CoR stuff. I don't know if guide-anon looks at the feedback page much. Sending him an email or responding here would be much more effective. I don't really see what the other anon is on about though, I think the new one is an improvement.
I remember some anon mentioning once that he had some Jap website he used to check how long a VN was at native reading speed. Does anyone remember that site, or anything like it? The time isn't listed on vndb.

There's no way to fix fundamentally poor writing. Anything written by an ESL sounds unnatural and of low quality. Because they haven't an innate understanding of the language from a very young age, their knowledge is purely artificial and can never give the same, clean feel of naturally written prose. The only solution is to have a native speaker rewrite it from scratch.

>>139054676
>Where can I read more about this (and possibly improve my writing)?
Nowhere. Nobody documents different varieties of academic english and I had to make those up from memory for the sake of writing up the post. They primarily differ in how they use different prepositions (a lot like how american and british english differ on "different than" and "different from") and the patterns that are used for conjunctions. If you see "for" used as "because", for example, it's probably one of the bottom two categories.
By far the best way to improve academic writing is to read shitloads upon shitloads of academic writing. The quality doesn't matter. Acquiring a large number of rules that accomplish the same thing will give you your own school of thought for filtering out what ones you dislike and why you dislike them. That's how people graduate from literate english to academic english; you just have to go further and further. I just happen to be some kind of autistic linguistics savant who acquires grammar patterns after only like five exposures.

Pretty much. Some skip when they finish reading, some only skip some lines, some fully listen to the voice acting of every line. Then you've gotten take into consideration their reading speed for all of the narration and unvoiced lines, etc. Lots of things can cause it to vary. Pic related is MLA for example.

It's just that the person who wrote this sentence has very poor Japanese ability.
>The 「を」 character, while technically pronounced as /wo/ essentially sounds like /o/ in real speech.
Does this vary depending on the words surounding it or the area of Japan or something like that? I'm sure I've heard it said as "wo" by natives before.
>>139055683
>So there are people who just read 1 route and then log a time and rating, screwing everyone over like the lazy douches they are.
That's probably the case with a lot of them. That's why I picked MLA to show an example since it only has 1 route. The closest thing it has to choices that affect play time time are the choices that let you choose whether or not to listen to the infodump.

The communications minister has been arguing that it would be a better idea to replace the current shitty copper network with mobile broadband towers instead.
Off topic but yeah, the situation is at least a decade behind the rest of the western world.

Nah, I'm not him, unless you're referring to someone else. I just do stuff people in feedback ask me to (usually just adding stuff to the CoR) and add requested stuff to the site like the DoJG QC / Alternate styles, manage the Rikai+Firefox+FI+ITHVNR texthooking pastebin, etc.
--
Anyways, CoR is basically fucked. 3rd time this guy has done this now, except this time we still have most of the important stuff.
If you guys have backups to any of the dead stuff, upload them to mega and send it to feedback. I'll start going through tomorrow marking the dead links / moving them to the bottom of each sheet as a "link graveyard" of sorts.
Could've been worse, but stuff like this is why the remaining contents are spread across 10-15 other people. We've likely lost most of the manga, LN, and movie tab content though.

Why does he still have access to anything?
I don't get why during this whole time no one bothered to make a decent backup. Aren't their people here with Eastern European type stupidly fast fibre connections and stuff? Why would it be left in the hands of someone on an Australia connection? That's like leaving a pizza with a hambeast and expecting it to be there when you come back.

>>139060256
Seems like it might be worthwhile to try to get duplicate upload links (like 3 for each item) all uploaded by a different person so that no one has the power to rage-erase the files. Of course you'd have to get people to upload and submit them.
In any case a few of the ones I've checked that were deleted actually exist in the bulk collections at the top of the tab still, so we at least have those.
>>139060335
Don't need access to DJT to access a mega account.
>>139060461
>Of course you'd have to get people to upload and submit them.

>>139060461
And by ones I've checked I mean a few of the LNs. Didn't realize even more has gone down.
>>139060256
Oh, ok. Are you from Australia? I might've confused myself. I'm sure some prominent poster here is Australian, like old CoR-kun. Maybe it was the DOJG-deck guy, now that this >>139060458 happened.
If the link to something you wanted is dead, get this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Dark_%28P2P%29
Download it from there, check it to make sure it's legit, and upload it back up for us. Post links in the feedback section of the link in the OP.
I really don't get it then. He's even the one who made and uploaded the all-in-one learning pack? That was pretty recent. It's kind of strange that he would suddenly sperg out and go on a crusade against DJT.
>>139060529
Pretty much. Like what >>139060391 said, there are people who downloaded all of CoR, they're just too lazy to be bothered reuploading it to help out other people.

>>139060655
No, but it's *extremely* helpful.
>>139060654

>>139060707

On the bright side it's mostly just manga and LNs that are gone, and most of them are still in the LN collections.

The guy who threw the recent shitfit was firm that the (original) DoJG project content was a koohii project. CoR-kun seems to have a different opinion of events.

If you have backup links, re-upload them to mega and reply to this post with them or send them to the feedback form.
It's not really a big deal. Most of this stuff is on nyaa or PD anyways. In the future we'll just need to be more cautious of individuals uploading massive amounts of manga and reupload anything they give us so they can't delete it down the line (again) like this.
>>139061592

I thought I was the only one that think like this, so I refrained voicing my opinion at first. But since at least somebody else out there think similarly, I'd offer an opinion.
I understand completely from your POV, and maybe other anons that contributes highly to the new guide's POV too, that Wanikani is not a good business model.
However there is a fine line between "disagreeing on Wanikani in ephemeral djt threads" and "making an official stance on the issue" in a public guide.
That is where I disagree with you. Sure WaniKani maybe a business, but there are people that depends on WK and Tofugu's continued wellbeing for their lives.
I understand you have your moral stance in life, but your opinion about Wanikani in the guide can not be attributable to you because 4chan is by designed giving option to be anonymous.
So a public guide about Japanese Language in 4chan will not be seen as your own opinion, but it will be generalized into "4chan's public stance against Wanikani".
Maybe "4chan's opinion" that's written in the new guide will just be a drop in the ocean and won't affect WaniKani's business.
But in the off-chance that it affects WK business just enough that they can't maintain their current staffs, as a business, they might have to let go somebody some time.
In the off chance that that happens, you will be directly contributing to some WK or Tofugu employee getting let go, without the accountability ever be attributable to you.
I would offer you an opinion to be more subtle about WK on the guide.
Something along the line of
>WaniKani is a paid website which teaches you 6000 words and 2000 Kanji over the course of one year.
> Whether it's good or bad is your own decision
> Many people think it's slow
Something like that.
Throw the judgement of WK to the readers instead of slightly condemning WK yourself like the guide is currently written.

The wanikani section of his FAQ is a very good summary of the usual DJT stance on wanikani (notice how I didn't say "DJT's stance" or "4chan's stance" -- don't bait). It might sound like it's biased against it, but it really does literally outline the objective difference from anki. That is *much* more fair than your option, because it actually speaks the truth.
In fact, including wanikani without objectively evaluating it against the free options is a disservice to every single other paid japanese resource. If wanikani is merely mentioned, and "it teaches you this much in this time time", then the mere presence of its name is an incredible positive. Any paid resource that is not mentioned will be relegated to literal irrelevance, and wanikani will be present as a neutral, no matter how good or bad said paid resource really is.
>>139064772
Wanikani is inferior to anki by all meaningful metrics. Wanikani costs money and artificially restricts your ability to study. Anki is free and you can use it to study the way you want.
There can be no serious, honest discussion about which is superior software, as the answer is self-evident. There is no reason to include Wanikani in the guide, as it is, again, an objectively inferior option.
>>139064993
You don't understand, I have to check this thread every 5 minutes

I was just objecting to his moral stance against Wanikani being written in the guide unnecessarily, when all he needs to say is "There are a number of paid Japanese learning programs commonly recommended, such as Wanikani and Rosetta Stone, which are in actuality strictly inferior to our free tools listed here. Do not use them."

-----
Since you've made 2 posts concerning your stance in the last thread that made me understand where you're coming from better. I'd like to blog a bit here so that you can understand where I come from better.
I lived a normal life in a developed country where everything is all fine and good and how it's supposed it be for a portion of my life. Then I had to move to a "developing" country where everything there is, is the total opposite of how I used to live.
>Internet have censorship based on religious law
>The government effectively blocks thousands and thousands of websites that doesn't align with their view
>The censorship method is even questionable at best because anybody can report offending sites, and if enough reports are being submitted, said website will be block
>There were a lot of websites that got trollbanned
>Another part of this is that the government deliberately limiting access to the internet by making internet used to be $200 a month for a 5mbps internet.
>The minimum income of that country is not even twice that amount, and the average income is <$1000
>Basically people can't afford internet
>There is no national entrance exams for university, so university make their own exams, and how much "entrance donations" are part of examination consideration IF the testakers in question happen to be on the 1/4th of the bottom line of the faculties seats quota.
So what I'm trying to say is that this "developing" country government basically strangles the lower-income household in a way so that their families will never be able to gain a better footing in life both by suppressing information flow and also limiting better educations for their childs by rigging the system so that only middle and rich income household are able to afford the expenses needed to send their kids to higher educations.
Because of this, I'm more tolerant with business practices and have more sympathy for the workers.

Local shady businesses in a poverious country: fine.
Developed web service that takes money in return for wasting peoples' time and *pretending* to educate them: You seriously can't defend this, especially if you live in a developing country where information is a problem. Your kind of country is literally the reason that education/information freedom has to exist. The memeification of services like wanikani only serves to actively hurt peoples' education, even in the developed world.
Wanikani is one of the first places someone here at DJT pointed me, and it wasted three months of my life. I need to learn japanese so that I can do commissions and feed myself food better than mcdonalds and spend less time holed up on the computer so that I can worry about my health. My region has a very high GDP because of capitalism, but there are very few jobs. Even mcdonalds will not hire me. I literally cannot financially afford to move somewhere I can get work because I don't have money to live even for a week before my first paycheck.
Three months delay is a huge problem to me, but Wanikani will waste at least two years' of peoples life planning and not even leave them off in a state where they can read japanese, because it's an "all in one" services that literally does not prepare people to actually read japanese.
Have any of you read the works of Matsuo Basho in Japanese? I was wondering how difficult they are.

You should find out what grade level he writes at.
A book like Botchan by Natsume Soseki is around middle school level in Japan.
>>139066464
I, uh... I'm learning Japanese for literature, actually. inb4 crossboarder, I do like anime & manga, but it was Mishima's "The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea" that truly drove me to start studying the language.
>>139066478
But you guys said i should care about 100% understanding and just feel everything.
>>139066490
Oh, good idea. And I plan to read some of Soseki's novels in the future, so that's nice to know. Do you happen to know how to find this information?
>>139066639
It depends on how much you care about what you're reading. If it's something you really care about, reading it while still learning Japanese is likely to diminish your experience, even if you will learn something from it. So if you don't really care about Steins;Gate you might as well roll with it.
>>139066198
pick your poison. read official english release where 50% of lines are straight up cut or read it in japanese where you dont understand 50% of it
youre no better off one way or the other
>>139066654
I don't. I just happened to find out what Botchan's grade level is while searching about it. I think such information is sometimes mentioned in the respective book's index.
If you're going to go into Soseki, I also recommend The Miner. I'm perpetually stuck at page 130 because it fell out of my bag while I was returning home from something half a year or so ago. It had the rarer cover too, that they don't print anymore! It was a good though, Soseki's most experimental work.
Botchan is very good too and I recommend starting with that as it is a pretty "simple" story.
Also, pick up Akutagawa's book of 17 short stories. High recommend.

The two I'd most like to read are "I Am a Cat" and "Kokoro" (his two most famous works, from what I gather), but if I do end up enjoying them as much as I expect to, I will inevitably try to read all of his books.

You know, I'm perfectly fine with paying for non-tangible products. People have got to make a living, and considering the quality rise that can come with more time, more professional staffs, and more incentive to create more material, it becomes beneficial to the consumer, too. Subscription-based models can also be fine, depending on the product.
However, I hate this artificial limiting on how far you can go into the program per month. This is where you stop working with the customer and start trying to sabotage the customer for more money. If you want them to subscribe for a year, then just give them a trial period and make the rest a year-long contract. Don't work against their progress.

I think that he's complaining about "useless" vocabulary.
Maybe someday, he'll realize how stupid it is to consider any vocabulary in a language that he's learning useless. All it takes is one author deciding that he wants the characters to talk about the economy (not that uncommon of a topic), and the word has found its use. He's going to be running across a lot of "useless" vocabulary in his reading.

I understand where you're coming from with your sympathy for the workers and their need for money, but WaniKani is not based in a developing country with a corrupt government.
The section in the FAQ does not simply say "WaniKani is shit, don't use it". It clearly describes the drawbacks which it has and compares these to Anki. Like other said, including in the guide as a paid resource without evaluating it against the alternatives would be nothing short of advertisement, and a terrible idea altogether since the guide is supposed to help people with self-sustained learning, not show them the door to an ecosystem that ties them down in their progress.
If we're already on the topic, yes, I believe that there is a philosophy that stands behind the guide and upon which it is based. This philosophy is to help those who wish to educate themselves to find the means to do so. I believe that recommending someone who doesn't know better a resource which ties them down in their learning rather than one which offers them the freedom to learn at their own pace, is nothing short of sabotaging that person in their progress. Since Wanikani is a recurring topic in these threads as of late, it makes sense to discuss it in the FAQ, and equally so to mention what it does and what it has to offer in comparison to free resources, which is not very much.
So yes, in the off chance that WaniKani actually looses business because of this being included in the guide and has to fire people, that is fine by me. I'd rather not have people be fired over something I wrote on the internet, but a bad business model is a bad business model and I will be glad to see a company with a business model that cripples learners disappear.
Tofugu employees have the luck to live in a developed country which offers social security and helps people get back on their feet and find a job again. Hopefully they'll find a place at a company which makes better use of their skill.

I think the guide should only include resources that are completely free and shouldn't even mention stuff like WaniKani.

Try writing it in your mind after being distracted for a moment or something. Actually, try it right now after reading this post without looking back up. Site anon here. Finished going through the CoR's links.
Damage report on the mass deletion that occurred last night:
- 漫画: 336 of the 897 manga were deleted (561 remaining)
- 小説: A few text format LNs and one of the collections at the top. I may of missed a few when going through and marking, but most of the dead text format LNs can be found in the collections at the top though since that's where they came from, so it's not as bad as it looks. If anyone happened to download the missing collection pack at the top, then feel free to upload that because that basically means we lost nothing in the 小説 tab.
- 映画: Most of the movies were deleted
- 教本: All in One Learning Pack and the DoJG deck mega link (also includes individual entry note scan images and an index PDF)
The manga was really the only big hit (I doubt the movie tab was used much compared to the other tabs), but it's not too bad compared to the previous times he's done this. I'm sure someone has backups of the DoJG stuff and the learner pack.
Again, if anyone has a backup of the missing LN pack (named "AWZ3/EPUB/MOBI Collection" in the CoR), then if you re-upload that, that essentially means we lost pretty much nothing in the 小説 tab.
tl;dr - It's not too bad. If you have missing stuff, upload it and send it to feedback.

What the hell is that string of three long characters on the left? Three う?

Those look like Zodiac signs. That る looks pretty neat, though.

>they copied the last line upside down
I bet there is a great story behind this, something like a teen assistant that's always in a hurry carrying dozens of pages with one consonant's line each on them to his master and accidentally turning one of them around.

I posted that image, just searched for soushotai, and got this, so I'm not sure, but I can read it to some extent.
Indeed it's definitely starting with う after the のみ、and I think it's うこしう. But that し looks strange a little.

>making this seem like it was a bad thing and people are victims here
I don't get it, if someone decides to share something they uploaded they can also decide to stop sharing that. At the end of the day if mega shits the fan, it is the uploaders who end up in shit so you can't blame them for not wanting a huge collection of illegal content to the user accounts for a long time. People usually upload things to share using temporary storage for others to grab if they want a copy. I wouldn't be willing to keep a large amount of stuff to my name floating around like that and based on how much was removed on the account of only a few people, the rest of us weren't willing to create backup links for redundancy either.
That is kind of the nature of the beast of the net: direct clearnet cloud storage should never be relied upon for ubiquitious longer term public access solutions. This is where a torrents should be seeded and if other anons here deem that collection of files something to keep for distribution, I suggest you take a little more responsibilty as a group for those of interest to use proper viable solutions to avoid third party cloud hosting providers. From a distribution point of view it is short sighted and as can be seen, too vulnerable.
This a good chance to take a mature approach or risk repeating the same mistakes without the benefit or learning from them. Take it as a grain of salt if need be, as it is at the end of the day your site.

All I do is add links to a spreadsheet and occasionally make changes to the site. No victims here and I'm not really worked up over it, just letting people know what's gone so they can re-upload it if they want to.
Plus anyone could've made backups, it doesn't have to be me and there's no reason why it needs to be me. The only resource I have access to that most of the posters in the thread don't have access to is the ability to edit the google docs

You forgot the worst of them, you and you
Seriously, what kind of third world language doesn't have a separate pronoun for 1st/2nd/3rd person and singular/plural each?
>>139082302
Nah, it's disgusting and depressing. You can really see the creator's rotten grey soul reflected on it.
Look at the fonts too, those were clearly picked by someone who loved to stack cans as a kid.

English being the language of intellectuals, there is no need for such blatant expressions. Truly, it is deserving of being the global language.

What's the best site for raws?
I was thinking of making a script to download everything off one of those sites though it would be hard if all the filehosts enforced long waits.
Do any of you know of any western books/shows/games which got good Japanese translations? I'd be interested in seeing something localized from the other way around.

I heard once in koten class that the word 蜉蝣 is originated from 陽炎, because the flying mayfly looks like the actual 陽炎現象 or something like this.
For anyone that is fluent, have you tried watching western tv/movies with Japanese subtitles?
How is it? I imagine it wouldbe very strange hearing in english and reading in japanese at the same time.

You just end up focusing on the spoken part most of the time because it's more convenient. Unless you force yourself to read along your brain just starts ignoring the subs.
hold on, so theres multiple ways to read the number kanjis now, but only for some of them? what happened here, i was doing fine with just one reading.
>>139083365
Welcome to Japanese. You'll get used to it with more exposure. If you get similar looking ones mixed up still after a while, consider some form of individual kanji study.
>>139083070
I didn't know that. Looking it up, it's actually mentioned in this dictionary entry.

Kanji has 1 or 2 readings, one reading is for the kanji when it's alone, another reading is for the kanji when it's joined on to something.
There are exceptions to this but that's the general rule of thumb.Have fun :)
