Ask, Japan who had the world's second best navy behind the Royal Navy before WWII with the US, and who had it completely destroyed in a matter of a few months. Granted it wasn't as modernized, but it was a good navy with good ships. Military wise China would get its shit wrecked by any real big military player like the Russian Federation, France, Britian, and the US, but they would do some heavy damage.

And they're modernizing fast. This isn't twenty years ago. Many of the ships that are being churned out have decent hardware not to mention their new carriers. They may not be able to beat the US in the middle of the Pacific ocean, but a fight near the homeland backed up by missile batteries and airbases will go either way.

On that note, Marvel Superhero films HAD military backing, but it ended during the filming of the first Avengers movie, when the government dislike how Nick Fury gave the middle finger to his superiors. Basically SHIELD was too far removed from real military and the US government cut ties ever since.
Thankfully the franchise is now big enough to afford their own military hardware now.

The thing about GATE that's interesting (and somewhat alarming) is not so much it's promotion of nationalism (which is not exactly unique to Japan), but rather its specific ideal of nationalism as tied to the military, defined explicitly against the self-interested and morally bankrupt agents of 'civilian Japan', whether that be the media, 'traitorous 'left-wing critics of the JSDF or the government itself.
A major theme running through the show is of the JSDF's consistent moral purity and patriotic protection of Japanese citizens, which is constantly limited in by the political/diplomatic concerns of the civilian government. Each time, the JSDF triumphs (killing the dragon, fighting off the bandits in Italica) by just ignoring the orders of a cynical civilian government to do 'the right thing', sending the message that "if only the JSDF had more power, and was less limited by the government..."
Take the diet summons over the report of refugee deaths, where the female politician questioning them is portrayed negatively as a cynical and 'anti-Japanese' villain, trying to attack JSDF for her own personal agenda and vendetta. Considering that the government only has the JSDF's word to go on, to call them in and ask hard questions about their actions is an entirely appropriate method of holding the military to account. But the clear contrast the anime makes between 'villainous' politicians' and 'heroic' JSDF (with grateful refugees) leads to the the implication that any criticism or questioning of the JSDF's action is mistaken, and that to do so is in some sense anti patriotic.
Its kinda significant within the context of Japan, where since WW2 the JSDF has had basically no political power, along with the a general pacifist consensus among the Japanese people. The promotion of a version of 'military' rather than 'civic' nationalism at a time when the pacifist consensus is breaking down and Article 9 has been amended is a bit scary.
