Why not both? Obviously reading is more fun, but pairing the two leads to quicker and more efficient learning than just reading. Just keep the time spent in Anki relatively small compared to compelling content.

I'd argue that it's probably singular, though I suppose context would make the determination. But the implication is "the thing of your important person disappearing" (in general, may have happened more than once) is your fault.

Sure. As in it's the consequence of your actions? But I'm not sure that's a meaningful difference.

Sentences are a bitch to understand.

So correct me if i'm wrong; Japanese tends to be more " unspecific" and shorter, Kanji covering most of the sentence?

This is wrong on several counts.
>You get better at Anki'ing as you go, allowing you to take in more words each day as you progress.
>The more words you learn, the more previously unknown words you'd be able to decipher through your existing kanji and vocab knowledge.
>By reading and mining, you'll get a shortcut to the generally uncommon words that are particular to your favorite reading material
With all this combined, you'll be able to read reasonably well much sooner than you imagine.

That does require you to hit the raws, though. If you think you can just fall into an Anki rut and start blazing through raws 20k cards later, you're in for a surprise.

>I would just fall back asleep

Sounds like you're not sleeping properly:
>Free running sleep is defined by the abstinence from all forms of sleep control such as alarm clocks, sleeping pills, alcohol, caffeine, etc. Free running sleep is a sleep that comes naturally at the time when it is internally triggered by the combination of your homeostatic and circadian components. In other words, free running sleep occurs when you go to sleep only then when you are truly sleepy (independent of the relationship of this moment to the actual time of day). Night sleep on a free running schedule lasts as long as the body needs, and ends in natural awakening. No form of sleep disruption is allowed. In particular, any use of an alarm clock is the cardinal violation of the free running sleep principle.

I'm nearing the end of core 6k and would like advice on what to do next. Pretty sure the general consensus is to mine vocab after this but I'm wondering how many

of you have found 10k. I heard somewhere what it covers is fine but the order in which it does it is bad. If thats all thats wrong with it maybe this is the right choice

for a lazy fuck like me.

And for those just focusing on mining at this point. How much do you roughly read each day for this? and how many words do you tend to add each day? I know I

don't read enough but perhaps I'll get burnt out slower if I'm using 'my' deck.

I know this has been mentioned in previous threads but please humour me; what's the best method for adding mined vocab to a new deck, and will this way add an

example sentence with it? I find them useful to see how a word is used.

Thanks for any help.

>>138827554
Can you choose the definition Rikai-sama would import? There are cases where the word I want is neither the first definition for its kanji, nor the first definition for its kana, so I can't get it in through the auto-import, even if I retype the word.
>>
>>138827232
What's with that spacing? Anyways
>I know this has been mentioned in previous threads but please humour me; what's the best method for adding mined vocab to a new deck, and will this way add an example sentence with it? I find them useful to see how a word is used.

Anyways, if you're reading VNs or watching anime with Japanese subs (so stuff that can be texthooked), then http://pastebin.com/raw/DgZ84qwk works pretty well. Essentially makes making new cards a 1-2 button process for the vast majority of words (some have multiple entries and you want a specific one or Rikai doesn't have audio so you have to get it somewhere else like Forvo).

I've also heard it works with Capture2text if you're reading manga/LN scans or something though.

There's even a tag on the Rikai import settings to get the sentence you imported the word from (though lines with sentence ending punctuation won't import the whole line, not sure if there's a way to change that). If you want sets of example sentences generated in the cards for you rather than just using the context you found it in, you could also pair it with Epwing2Anki, but that's slightly more tedious.
>>
>>138827717
Enable sticky mode (press "u" while hovering over a word) and mouseover the entry you want. If that doesn't work either, then just manually fix the card real quick by copy-pasting (sticky mode lets you copy paste from the popup). If you accidentally click somewhere else and get rid of the Rikai popup, just ctrl+click on a word.

>>
>>138828965
>It kinds of defeat the purpose.
When cards are mature, you're supposed to know them, so it doesn't defeat the purpose. Furthermore, Anki is a supplement to reading. When you can read easily, then that will become your SRS, and anki becomes bunk. I dropped Core2k/6k because I saw all the words while reading so much, the deck was a waste of time. So no, dropping decks doesn't defeat the purpose.

The equation here is "effort" vs "desire to expend effort", and the desire to expend effort reviewing material you already know well every day for the rest of your life (or otherwise years) is very low, which cancels out however low the effort may be. For most people.

I can understand this, but personally I haven't set a limit to "how blue" a card can get, so to give you an example my oldest deck has cards I won't have to review before 2017 or even 2018. Seeing a card just takes me 2 seconds, it's nothing.

I'm kind of a completionist though, and I see how someone could call me an autist for it, but yeah I understand why some people decide to do that, it's completely fair.

Can syllables only go from unvoiced to voiced or they can go both ways?

I don't know what you mean, kanjigrid has "180" days be strong by default so blue is 180, or perhaps 360 if 180 is the middle and not the end.

A good way to reduce the amount of reviews in the long run is to play with the modifiers. I set my interval modifier to 120% and easy bonus to 170% when I had about 1000 words left and was grinding 60-80 new words per day. Now I only have to deal with 30-50 reviews per day.

Fucking with your intervals is something you should only do when you're very sure that the cards you're going to do will be very easy (to you) or just when you've already finished the deck.

I still use default interval modifiers on my mining deck which is my main deck now because I still come into contact with tricky words and new kanji every now and then.

I don't think you get it man. The urge to drop anki, the desire to be free, is a red hot seething passion within the hearts of men. If it comes down to reviewing material you already know for little benefit except conforming to SRS' schedule, you can bet your ass people will drop it like wildfire. I mean fuck, look at all the people who drop Core2k the moment they introduce the 2000th card, look at all the people who drop Anki ENTIRELY after Core2k, Anki is a monument to the worst aspects of language learning, the unending tedium of flashcards, the binding scheduels and the boredom. If a glint of light is seen within reading it is man's deepest desire to FLEE to escape the schackles of Anki's wretched flashcards and bask in the warm of reading's utopian plains, engaging in compelling content to his hearty's content. That is why it's rare for graphs to turn blue, for in order to so most men themselves would turn blue in intolerable sorrow.

Love your writeup dude, but once you finish a deck, the time to review each card gets really short. For instance I take an average of 40-60 seconds to do my reviews for core.

I'm guilty of dropping decks too though -- I worked my way through 120 cards in a 四字熟語 deck and one day I just went "Fuck this" and dropped it harder than I dropped Subete ga F ni naru on the first episode.

Well, so I say, but I finished the DOJG deck and I still do the 1-2 daily reviews just because. I figure when I can read LOGH/Muramasa without struggling I'll close anki for the final time though, just as a symbolic gesture of overcoming vocabulary hell and thus no longer needing Anki.

I'm halfway through core2k6. The first 2000 cards were really easy, I think I know 90 to 95% of it without any problems but when it comes to these 1000 cards I did next I noticed a difference as it got harder. I noticed I'm almost only paying attention to the Kanji and how they're read, and well from there I'm able to guess the meanings of other words and so on, etc.

My "problem" is that I don't really pay attention to what the word means. Of course I can guess it thanks to the Kanji meanings but often I just pay attention to how it's read and that's it. My take on this is that anyway core2k6k's translations are jisho-tier at best and thus can't convey all the nuances and so I'm probably better off not caring about this too much until I've read more. Did something similar happen to you guys?

tl;dr : I'm focusing on how Kanji are read much more than trying to understand what the words are and mean.
>>
>>138830241
Are you chinese or something
>>
>>138830259
No but I studied RTK1 and RTK3 for a good while before doing core so I don't have any trouble writing Kanji and telling them apart.

>>
>>138829976
Has a reading pack for it that's extremely helpful for beginners, is easy enough that you can jump right into it after Tae Kim and not have many issues, so it's not that frustrating, it's actually good (unless you have shit taste), 4chan's "mascot" etc.

Also the fact that most people on DJT start with Yotsuba when getting into reading, so it's just a cycle. Flyable Heart and Hanahira as first VNs is kind of the same way.

There are other manga that are likely just as easy, but the reading pack does wonders if you're a new reader.
>>
>>138830302
Do you have any problems with comprehension when reading? If you don't, I would advise that you be more strict when doing your reps, i.e. hit again when you remember the reading but only a vague meaning. Doing this should make you hit again more which means that you see the card (and the meaning!) more often helping you to drill it into your head.

>>
>>138836292
>its "because" he looks like a young boy that he looks just like the kid in the wanted poster
That makes no sense though. Estarossa looks like the wanted poster in the series. And the wanted poster shows an old man. There is non with a little boy, that's what's confusing me here.
>>
>>138822991
>If you think you can just fall into an Anki rut and start blazing through raws 20k cards later

So the thing is that I think that teh sentence should be

Because Estarossa, a grown man, looks like Melidodas' wanted poster, showing a grown man. The 'instead' wasn't outright in the sentence though which implies what you wrote here >>138836292 which in return would make no sense.
