I'm at a stalemate between which is better. I honestly don't feel either as superior, but I give a slight edge towards the 1999 version. It had more emotional feeling towards, the scenes had a deep meaning to them where as the 2011 version just showed them and tried to express them in a way that just resulted rather lackluster.

Greed Island was a waste of time learning about their shitty card game and solving stupid puzzles. Soldier Ants wasn't so terrible, except Hiatus x Hiatus sucked every ounce of tension out of the storyline and those die-hard fans that kept following into the shitty election arc should have got their final closure with Leorio and Kapruka showing up. You either haven't read HxH and base your judgement on the turkey page, or you just haven't read much manga in general and have absurd standards as a result. Most of it wouldn't stand out in Jump, meaning it's not bad but not amazing by weekly manga standards, but Togashi is good with panelling and it gives the series a boost.
