I never thought they were that impressive as a whole.
Marco, Jozu, and maybe Vista were the only ones outside of Whitebeard himself who did anything of note during the war while the rest of his commanders just got into little spats with nameless marine fodder.
You take away all the allied New World pirates (who we don't know if they were there or not), Whitebeard himself, and the Impel Down gang that showed up and the big army that fought the marines is now sort of shitty looking and small.
I have no doubt that Blackbeard+fruit+his commanders+his new crew+more fruit power are more than a match for what amounts to three tough guys and slightly stronger fodder.

The message he left in Skypiea suggests he understood what the poneglyph was talking about and that he'd even already followed its instructions. He had to have already passed through the New World to have that information.
Actually, last chapter said that carving the poneglyphs is a secret known only to Oden's line. Roger needed to have Oden on board at the time to have left that message at all. It's one thing to understand the poneglyphs with the voice of all things, it's another to carve a message into the stone in the ancient language.
