Uhh yeah, I live in a country where smoking/owning weed puts you behind bars for years. The severity or relevance of a crime doesn't matter, its how much money they can earn by putting people into private prisons and how quickly can they fulfill arrest quotas.

>>138622870
With torrents, you upload as you download, hence why it's illegal. In other countries, downloaders (and thus uploaders) are persecuted. With these changes in laws, I would not be surprised if that became common here too. Thus, not torrenting. It's not paranoid to avoid commiting illegal crimes over the internet when internet behaviour is being monitored.

We are working from here in an effort to provide an enriched window for customer interaction.

I still don't get how として works here. I think I get it to some extent, i.e., it modifies お客様との対話の窓口. I can't seem to grasp a big change in meaning with removing として from this sentence.

The examples on the DoJG pdf (として entry) were easy enough but I couldn't get how として was used in this next sentence as well.

I don't know how many words I know, as I don't use Anki. I learn vocab exclusively through reading VNs with a text-hooker. After a year, only chuuni titles have me using Rikaisama in general. I don't need text-hooking for most moege/plotge.

My process was basically:
>tae kim
>radical deck in anki
>basic VNs (everything by union soft essentially)
>refer to DoJG when necessary
From when I first started learning Kana and reading Tae Kim, it took me exactly 2 weeks to start reading.
>>
>>138623797
What I think you should do is regardless of what ability you're at right now, try to read it anyway.
The first time I tried to read it, it was so difficulty.
It took me a very long time to even have any idea of what was being said.
I felt pretty dissuaded and gave up for a while.
A few weeks later I tried again from the start and it was still difficult but slightly easier then last time.
After a few chapters I started having a much easier time and was really enjoying myself.

Just try to read it now (as long as you at least know the basics of grammar), even if you think you might not be ready. If it seems hard, keep at it. It will get better.
>>

Started reading Ayakashibito. Disappointingly easy. Well, it's actually making me feel good because I didn't get blown the fuck out like Bradyon Veda. The reason for this is because so far Ayakashibito hasn't had any long spiels of 専門語 like BV did with its unending physics stuff.

I get that it works that way however I couldn't get how it works specifically for that sentence. I mean DoJG lists として as (in capacity as; as, in the role of) (or something like that).

i.e, if I were to translate it literally, it would mean 'In the capacity of customer interaction' which doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something?

I'm looking up about as many words as I do in a moege, even. Not a bad thing just not something I was expecting.

My goal for studying is to read adult Sci-Fi novels, because right now they're the hardest things I know, so it's reasonable to make them into a goal. So in terms of studying reading VNs like this doesn't seem to be a very efficient process which makes me hesitate to do so. I'm stuck in that uncomfortable mid point being intermediacy (sic) and fluency where to bridge the gap I just need to read a lot of easy material (which is just about everything) however reading that easy material feels like a waste due to all the time spent pushing myself. How troubling.

The mini 多読 is coming up for March (15th~31st)! Anons who are interested in pushing themselves to read more should join, no matter what level you're at.

Picture books, graded readers, children's books, news articles for kids, manga, games, VNs, light novels, adult novels all of it is fine! Just read at your own level + try to reach your goal # of pages. If you're motivated by dick waving contests (a lot of people here seem to be) there is a leaderboard, too.

What is 多読? (tldr: read, read, read!) https://readmod.wordpress.com/category/how-to/

Sign up:
-you will need a twitter acct (make a throwaway one for this if you don't already have one)
-you need to follow the @TadokuBot account, this is how your # of pages is tracked

I don't know but I'm interested in a lot of older titles like Legend of Galactic Heroes, 9S and 宇宙海兵隊 ギガース. But really, I just really don't like being of the level where I can't just read anything in Japanese without caring that it's in Japanese. For example if I see a nukige or moege or something I'm interested in I'll DL and read it no problem without breaking a sweat. But if I see a cool untranslated SCI-FI novel/manga/etc then I'm just fucked to either not read it or otherwise struggle through it with a dictionary which I don't want to do. I really don't like that.

You know, this post may have just opened my eyes. I've been stressing a lot about reading a proper amount of Japanese, reading 5 hours a day, studying hard... but maybe that's not necessary. Maybe I should just be reading what interests me, when I find it, and being satisfied with that. Don't let Japanese dominate my life. Sure, it'll slow progress, but what do I care? In truth the only reason I stress so much about progress is the fact that I want to be able to converse easily with natives and not embarass myself in front of friends and family who know I've been studying Japanese for a long time (advice: if people know you know Japanese, they will want to go to Japan and take you along to do the speaking). Perhaps it's best to let that anxiety slide off, keep up with reps, and just have a good time with life.

The only problem with this though is that I'd of course want to keep up anki and I don't have enough unseen cards to keep up my pace of new words without substantial reading. So I guess I'm compelled to either way.

Starting to wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to learn readings by Kanji. I know how to write already as well as all the meanings so I'm fine in that regard but grinding vocab is just too annoying.

I know you guys are going to call me a retard but let's put that aside for a second and go with what I said : how would one go about learning all the readings individually? Although I'm an RTK fag RTK2 is just too bad. KD would also be bad since I believe the goal of KD is to learn Kanji and a few of their readings by making stories based on it? Since I already did RTK it'll overlap and just confuse me, on top of making me waste a lot of time. Wanikani perhaps? I don't know much about this.

Thoughts?
>>
>>138628566
Why not learn readings as you encounter them in vocabulary?
That way as you go each reading will also be attached to various vocabulary words that it belongs to in your mind.

As far as I know this is pretty much the one thing that DJT can almost unanimously agree on, that learning a list of readings for each individual kanji is a waste of time.

When the Portuguese were in Japan then they didn't know Japanese and no one was there to help them learn, but they knew that if they kept trying then one day they would understand Japanese. If the Portuguese just said, "This language is too hard. We're going back home. We're giving up." then our chance to learn Japanese would have died in 16th century. But the Portuguese said, "I don't care what we have to go through! We're going to learn this language!"

Decades of working every day to learn a language that no other westerner had ever even encountered, and now we have people in 2016 who can't get through a couple hundred reps or a few hours of reading? We have access to resource after resource designed to teach us this language and people are still quitting and saying that it's too hard?

The problem is that most of us have never felt any pain. This is a soft generation filled with people that quit on everything. The Portuguese did not quit! They not only learned Japanese, but they wrote entire dictionaries! They said, "Sure, I did it. I can understand Japanese, but that's not enough for me. Now I'm going to go all the way back to the beginning and write a dictionary!" and we've got people quitting on anki reps?

This generation might be soft, but the blood of those early pioneers who learned Japanese is still within us! Maybe you're only studying for a few hours and thinking that you've given it your all. Come on! Your all is a lot more than you know! You've got more inside of you to give! Don't sell yourself so short!

I'm a big autist in that regard and for the longest time I've had a really hard time with numbers in Japanese, as well as giving time and such. Even 2-3 years after I started that shit was just too hard.

But somehow after a while it got better and now I don't have any problem anymore. I remember bringing up this topic once and a DJT anon gave me a good reply about this issue of mine, basically saying that the reason we are good with numbers in our own language is because we've used them many many times, like at school and everything. Because you read some TaeKim chapter or whatever about numbers and learned how to count in a day or two doesn't mean you've mastered numbers.

So yeah, don't worry anon, it'll be fine in the long run, don't be too hard on yourself or anything, one day it'll just feel right. Just force yourself reading them in Japanese whenever they come but that's it, leave the rest to time.

>holy shit, there goes my dreams of reading LoGH
It's important to consider some factors. First, LoGH is 10 volumes long, so it's like 2,713 kanji over 10 different novels. Second, of those kanji, 251 only appear once, meaning only 2,462 appear multiple times. Furthermore, if you push it a little more, only 2084 appear 5 or more times. So realistically speaking, you can tackle LoGH with 2084-2462 kanji and theoretically handle it pretty easily (theoretically because of course there's no guarantee the kanji you know will be in LoGH)

The main reason Clephas' "method" gets shit is specifically the line
>Playing VNs without a text hooker isn't realistic even for most people that do know Japanese
On /jp/ using a texthooker is pretty taboo, because you know so many language learners go to post there and it's pretty annoying, so the people who know Japanese have developed condescension towards them and their activities. So clephas' quote here earns much ire.

Plus look at his line here
>I still hate to play moege-type without a hooker
Because he uses romaji so much on his texthooker he's bad at reading without it which is objectively bad. I know I haven't veen studying for 2 years yet but reading moege without a hooker is not a problem at all. So that part of his method absolutely deserves ire because it's fucking him up.

Sorry I wasn't idling on djt that much the past months so I didn't see your reply even though you replied me 5 mins after.

I hope you see this even if my reply is an hour too late. I'm somewhat hesitant to give you this advice because from what you've been saying so far, I think number-wise you know more, far more kanji in quantity than I do.

However, are you familiar with the term 意符 音符 and 形声文字? All kanji books worth it's salt would teach you about those three terms. I actually have RTK1 but I never read the intros so I don't know if it's ever explained there or not.

If you know what the three terms means, it will helps you immensely with figuring out how to read words, and you may not even have to grind vocab that much.

How to read. Let me give an example, 義理 会議 礼儀 犠牲 all are using a variation of 義. Even if you don't know the meaning of all 4 words, you can "guess" that it’s possibly a ギ, if you are aware of what 形声文字 means and how prevalent it is in Japanese.

So in another example, a 交 can take 交通 学校 効力 郊外 and and you can guess that it's probably a コウ.

Now, you just have to remember that 較 is カク instead of コウ from knowing the word 比較.

That will cut your vocabs grinding by some degree I'd assume.

If you already know how to read, thankfully a lot of japanese words are not 当て字 so while I may never heard the word 校歌 before, I can guesswork that it has something to do with "school" and "song".

Now when it's 当て字, you can guesswork right away if it's 当て字 now that you've finished RTK1. In 寿司, 兎に角, or 目茶苦茶 the kanji is just used for it' sound.

A big percentage of words are 形声文字 so if you have 3,000 kanji in you or whatever is the amount of RTK3 is, just start reading more.

Of course you have to pay attention to irregular readings, and that's where Anki and exposure helps.
>>

What's the point? Japanese people just aren't funny.

I've started seeing those in core and wondered the same thing, "they all got the same main radical and are all pronounced the same way... it's gonna make things easier". Your explanation confirms all the things my brain seems to have guessed on its own.

>That will cut your vocabs grinding by some degree I'd assume.
The order cards are in core is rather nice in that aspect, pretty sure it was built that way actually.

Once again although my original comment was worded perhaps a bit too strongly I wasn't really complaining. It's true I can write 3k Kanji and so I can tell Kanji apart very easily but I'm still kinda just barely started when it comes to vocab, I'm just 3000 cards in core after all (doing 50 a day). These past days I've actually found things getting a bit better, so if I just keep at this pace it'll be fine I'm sure. My brain just needs time to adjust and gets used to it.

got a couple quick questions.

is there a difference between the "topic" that the -はparticle indicates and the subject of a sentence? I know you can switch topics using はbut I'm having ahard time seeing why i see people making the distinction.

second. I heard a phrase in a song i ended up trying to break down to understand the particles it uses
>音楽が好きな気持ち 誰にも止められない
which the subs translated as
>The feeling you like music can't be stopped by anyone
What's killing me is that が。 like, I get that 好き is describing きもち and not 音楽, but what is the が indicating it as an object to? the 好きな気持ち (as the object of desirable feelings) or the 止められない (the object of not being stopped)?

based on the translation, i could guess it's the former, but the structure kinda looks like it's both at once? the subject of the translation is the "feeling" while "music" is some kind of weird adjective (my grammar is rusty but it's certainly not the subject), but the whole phrase ("feeling" described by "liking music") is the object of "not being stopped"

>is there a difference between the "topic" that the -はparticle indicates and the subject of a sentence? I know you can switch topics using はbut I'm having ahard time seeing why i see people making the distinction.
Yes. Here is an example:

俺「おれ」は魚「さかな」が好「す」きだ。
About me, I love fish. (Or less literal, I like fish.)
Here, は marks what it is you're talking about (in this case, me). It marks the topic of the sentence. The rest is just a comment on the topic (魚が好きだ).
が here is used to mark the subject to which the property 好き is applied to. Can you see the difference?

It struck me that this list would be nice as small anki deck. With the provision that there are exceptions.

If anyone's interested, here is the thesis on which the Tofugu article that the guy used was based : https://sdsu-dspace.calstate.edu/bitstream/handle/10211.10/1203/Townsend_Hiroko.pdf?sequence=1

1. Stop relying completely on fan translations other than to help you understand the gist of the sentence.
Example, Mangastream translates a line なんて不運だ into "what a shitty luck". That's a translation choice made by the translator. I would choose to translate 不運 into "misfortune" instead of "shitty luck", and Viz official translation chose "misfortune" also.

2. Due to language difference, it's hard to equate what the English language called a "subject" and equates it 1:1 to Japanese は and が。

Don't take my word 100% on this because I learned japanese fundamentals before I ever was on djt but from what I was taught about は and が, the gist of it is this,

は is "pointing attention to a topic on which comments are made"

が is "marker of introductory statements" and also "light contrast"

3. Read the theoretical difference between は and が in published books specifically catered to grammars, like DoJG or particles books.

4. Read more.

Exactly, because Japanese is a so called topic–comment language. The best explanation of the difference between は and が is in the DOBJG. Also, you might want to check out the book A handbook of particles which has a lot of information on it.

Kanji books worth it's salt will teach you that. There is a plus and minus to RTK series but RTK2 simplified the process and you can see the 形声文字 in action.

I look at the books around me for inspiration but everything is taken. I wouldn't mind if the name was djt inspired but I can't think of anything.
