In commercial, the author gets paid per chapter for an anthology magazine (LO, Kairakuten, X-Eros, etc.). Usually the serialization is part of a tank deal.
Using market data and surveys while serializing in the magazine, the editorial and executives decide how many copies they want to put out in circulation.
The artists get paid:
(Number of Copies Issued)*(Price)*(Royalty %)=Tank Revenue
Copies Sold != Profit
However, Copies Sold impacts the next negotiation the artist has with the publisher.
Commercial publishing has checks and balances and insures that you are getting paid for the work done.
On the other hand, self published doujinshi is:
(Price)*(Number of Copies Sold)-(Printing Fees+Event Booth Fee+Transportation)=Doujin Revenue
The % cut of the artist is much greater than commercial publication but it involves risks of no insured income.
So when the publishers decrease the numbers of copies issued down due to a decrease in the copies sold market-wide(due to pirating or other factors), it tips the scale off balance, making the riskier option seem more favorable for artists to continue paying the bills.
