For me the moral of the story was indeed the fact that nothing will ever change. A melancholic realization, it's the tragedy of their society. Saki was shocked when little because of what adults did to educate the future generation and we can clearly get that she starts thinking something might be fucked up. Then what happens is that after everything she ends up managing the creatures that are supposed to kill the most unfit children, like there was nothing wrong with it when her children could end up the same others did.
I get how some may not like the show because it's not character driven at all, but instead I feel it was great because of its world building and pessimistic morale at the end. From our perspective their society is wrong, and even though some people get in touch with its brutality, they do nothing to make it change. Even after the whole squealer thing, we're back to the stasis present in the beginning.
I just rewatched this last week and I only have one question, how was Messiah able to kill the Giant Hornet army? I can understand her being able to pull their weapons away, but they said that all that remained of the army was lumps of flesh.
