>act self-effacing and humble in the hopes that he'll say something like "not at all! These look pretty good!"

Is he encouraging me to practice more (because my kanji are ugly) or expressing surprise/impressed that I'm practicing?

I'll be the first to agree that they're not perfect but I feel like I improved a lot since the first one. I'm not going to argue that my kanji are beautiful because they're not; my main question is in regards to what the Japanese guy means.

I spent 1 year doing nothing but a small amount of anki and some light Tae Kim reading. Took the whole year to finish Core2k pretty much. I then spent 1 year kicking it up a notch and reading hours a day. So I want to say, "I've only really been studying for 1 year" to make myself feel better about however progress I have, because "I can't understand X but I've only been studying for 1 year" sounds better than the same with 2 years. What do you think, everyone?
>>

>>
>>135598600
I've only lived for 3 years. I say 3 years because I spent 18 years believing in god, whom I forsake during my 19th year after birth. I've only spent 3 years living as an Atheist, and quite frankly, I don't want to let anyone know that I was ever Christian.

10,000 words, 2,610 kanji, many books read.
I didn't do listening practice for the entirety of both years though (just started today) so barely being able to follow 実況s on youtube and completely failing to follow the two lines spoken in this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBkMljyAmng makes me feel bad. Ergo, defensively saying "1 year" instead of "2 years". Though, of course, I'm only half serious and don't actually think making a distinction like that is a meaningful thing.
>>

I meant to say that it would point down rather than up not that it should be on the other side. But is it ト anyway though?

To say that anon's 髪 was "completely wrong" is a pretty fucking stupid statement. Let me guess, you've been studying for a few months and know it all? Have you had to read hand written notes in Japanese written by a native before, anon? I'm guessing not, judging by your reaction. Basically people here look for chances to shit on the output of people, just like you've done to that anon.

Not him but it's pretty true. I can read 800 Kanji + but reading Hiragana when my friend write them is already challenging. Kanji differ pretty when written by hand and also native speakers tend to make shortcuts or what one maybe would call a mistake. But native speakers don't like at every stroke at the Kanji, they look rather at the appearance and read it. So his 髪 should be easy to read even though one stroke is not right.

very stupid and wrong guess faggot.

calm down. in your zeal to diss someone on /djt/, you forgot to actually consider the material in question.

the handwritten form in your very own link only reinforces my assertion that he is practicing writing the character incorrectly.

specifically, in anon's "practice" you can see that the three strokes in the upper right are "nestled" inside of the upper left component, a major error that makes his writing look autistic as fuck. hence the reaction of his japanese study partner.
>>
>>135599773
It's a machine TL. Just turn all that machine translation shit off and possibly the word highlighting and furigana too. I usually just copy the text from the texthooker into my browser and look up stuff through that since sometimes chiitrans parses stuff incorrectly and you can't highlight the word you need.
>>
>>135599786
The deck purely exists as a way to inflate my KanjiGrid so my advice in that area is not useful at all. I just put any name into it that I haven't seen used in a word. 慧・けい for instance. (I know words exist on jisho). Will this help me read names? No clue, I just want the kanji.

Yes, I have only been studying for a month or so, I studied that kanji today and I pointed out the way he was writing it was out of proportion compared to the standard form (not the print one).
Of course manual handwriting is going to look different, but when you learn you use the standard as an example, not deformed varieties.

Well I used to do translation with him as the host for my blog. He was cool enough to foot that bill and give me pointers as far as working my way into the scanlation scene. If not for that I would have had no money through college.

Commission money like a motherfucker. Now I've pretty much dropped it because I've got a real job that pays about $30 an hour so translating and editing a 30 page book for $50 seems like a waste of my time now.

Now I just need motivation to get back in practice. I can feel it slipping.

What the fuck does ひろっとくわ mean? I get that he's probably saying if he sees her he'll do something but no dictionary or anything is showing anything relevant whatsoever. I've been running into this problem a lot. The past few pages have given me hell and I'm only getting started. Maybe I should wait and come back when I know more. I started out with anki and got so burned out and behind on my reviews I quit japanese. I came back a year later and decided to try again with rosetta stone and it was the best decision I ever made. Rosetta stone makes things understandable for an english speaker to comprehend, unlike tae kim who basically speaks korean to you the whole time with his examples.

60 kanji per day or you're incompetent.

The "learning Japanese" meme has to stop. Japanese is not a western language and works based on completely different concepts, there is no learning involved.

What you need is a yamato damashii and good intuition. The scribbles(you call them kanji) are just aesthetics and have no semantics value, you are meant to feel the language.
>>
>>135602920

>not 300 per day
>>
>>135602900
lol. Yeah, giving people effective learning tools really burns you huh? Too bad DJT made it a meme without realizing it'd be the most effective tool for 90% of it's readers. It'll probably keep showing up more and more.
>>
>>135602941
This.

The easiest way to do this is to watch anime. Your brain will eventually start understanding words from context and then whole sentences, including grammar, just like children do
>>
>>135602985

The difference is that it's easier to learn a language as a kid, After you turn 12 (?) or something it get's harder. If it were this easy everyone would just watch Animu. And even if what you said would work out, you still can't read nor write.
>>
>>135603033

This is doable, considering I learn 20 kanji everyday for less than an hour.

But I think it will burn you.
>>
>>135603159
All that matters is that the paid version of WaniKani is shit and that if you want to use it you should use the superior illegally ripped and 100% free as in freedom anki deck version.
>>
>>135603220

This.
>>
>>135603102
Much more efficient for the same content? Not really. WK divides everything into an easily digestable, step by step program with an attractive interface and nice community. Just accept it's not for you and move on from this silly anti-WK crusade.
>>
>>135603196
It depends on how much you're learning and how much you've got on your card. I can do ten cards per minute because I'm only memorizing their general meaning and it's all I have on my card. After you count in reps and failed cards I only need 15 minutes or so to do my daily reps, and that's if I'm slow.
>>

I'm already way past the level where wanikani could do any good for me (yet anki never ceases to be a good tool). Trust the word of experience son, it's crap. Complete, undiluted, overpriced crap. Don't buy into the pretty interface, they're selling you something that's worse in every aspect compared to what you can get for free. The only advantage you get is that it saves you the minor hassle of setting up anki. If you think that's worth your money by all means be my guest, buy their crap, but don't come here shilling this shit as if it were any good cause that's just evil behavior. It benefits those conmans at Wanikani and it might harm the progress of serious potential learners.
>>
>>135603731
It is real japanese. You should google it. It's basically real japanese, so often pretty formal and shit, but every sentence has a transcript on another page + at the end of the book is explanation for grammar if you haven't learned it. I think it's in one of the guide folders, I downloaded it some time ago if you are interested
>>
>>135603791
WK is not supposed to BE Anki. Nobody says you can't use Anki at the same time, or use Wk for ten or so levels with the monthly plan then switch to anki once you know SRS and a having a regular review schedule works.

And I'm not "shilling" anything, I just think it's hilarious people think they're "tricking" people by showing them a website that'll learn a large amount of kanji in a respectable amount of time that works for 99% of learners.

People can look at the site and decide for themselves, just please, please, stop shitposting day and night about the ~evils~ of wanikani and do something goddamn productive with your time.

>>
>>135604000
It's not a respectable amount of time, it's ridiculously slow.

It is tricking them because you can get everything they offer in a more customizable format for free, and without the stupid made up radical names which often have nothing to do with what they actually mean, a disservice to the learner who never gets to realize that those radicals are often working as a hint to the meaning of the kanji and will be completely lost in the future when somebody refers to the radicals by their actual names.

Finally, I seriously suspect you are quite literally shilling.
