Vegeta died, everyone thought Gohan died, Goku was dead, strongest villain of the series at the point is having the time of his life killing the inhabitants of Earth, the only hope was 2 little kids mastering some ghost alien space magic.
Buu not only succeeds in killing every living thing on the planet, but turns the major cast into candy and eats them and later successfully blows up the planet.
Buu arc was the most serious arc in the entire series.
