Interesting premise executed mostly well, one shot characters in each episode where given a significant amount of development so none of the emotions fell flat on their face. I was interested in the stories of each character in each episode and it was never a dull moment as I was always learning something new within the show be it in the lives of the humans or the lives of the Quindecim residence.
My only complaint would be the Quindecim residence themselves ended up being sorta flat outside of character designs save for Decim and Chiyuki.

It was a pretty straightforward year. There were a few big shows, like OPM and Euphonium that got popular and had huge, fast threads pretty much as soon as the livestream hit, but they weren't all that good outside of the threads. Unfortunately, all of the popular shows this year felt weak and all of the best ones were barely talked about and tiny threads that struggled to hit the bump limit on release day before 404ing.
I think the fact that the action show quota was filled 90% by really, really bad, low budget magical highschool battle LN adaptations had something to do with it, but in general it just comes down to luck of the draw. Hopefully the good shows that air next year will also be the popular ones.

Here's the problem with discussions on /a/: Almost everything worth saying about a show, almost all the analysis worth doing (when there's even a show worth analyzing), all of that? It's done in the currently airing threads. Everything after that is either a rehash of stuff already spewed in those threads, nostalgia for those threads, waifu/fanart image dumps, and other bullshit.
This means that when there's no good (or at least entertaining) airing shows, /a/ just becomes bait central with sexy images, aside from occasional threads that get dedicated but small fanbases to come out of the woodwork for a few hours.

The last arc for the anime was kinda weak, and it left off in the middle of elections but at least it's getting a season 2. Other than that though, I loved it. Every episode was enjoyable, got me excited, and wanting more. Easily the number one thing I looked forward to every week.

Basically this. the quality of the board fluctuates wildly depending on what shows release on that day of the week, and what shows are airing that season. Discussion threads for shows vary pretty far depending on the show itself. You won't see dissertations on post-structuralist analysis in a Yuru Yuri thread because it has no place there, but YKA threads certainly had its share of that kind of discussion while it was airing. At the end of the day, we talk about shows, which means a discussion is only as good as whatever the show gives you to talk about.
Shows about cute girls get discussion about how cute the girls are. Shows about highschool fantasy battles get discussion about how exactly alike they are to every goddamn other highschool fantasy battle show. Shows about movements in early medieval english theology and non-secular philosophy will naturally attract discussion about religion, philosophy and history. Sometimes, by some miracle, a show that's total shit happens to have discussion about damn near everything under the sun and be incredibly entertaining.
Sometimes a topic is good and goes over well, sometimes not so much. That's just the nature of /a/. If you don't like it, check back next season.

No really though, AOTY is NNBR. The only reason you could reasonably disagree to me is if you consider Hibike or Gochiusa instead since Repeat's fault (imo) was being too Renge-focused on the first couple episodes while the other two have been solid as fuck start to finish.
Sorry entry levels and normalfags, OPM was great, but not AOTY material. You have to remember, a lot of its eps weren't actually that spectacular. If half of its airing time it was being memed on as boring and repetitive on /a/ and it was a flop for a lot of its PO time in Japan, it's clear that it wasn't truly that solid.

I liked OPM but see it as rather flawed. I don't buy into the hype. An AOTY needs to be more enjoyable for its airing time than any other show that year. The crux of that is that enjoyment of certain types of anime is subjective. If I see qualities in moe shows that you do not, you are blind, not me.
Personally I didn't "get" moe shows until my early 20s and until then I didn't like or understand them much at all. I know I would never listen to my pre-moe self about anything regarding anime whatsoever. So it may take time or experience but once you understand, there is no straining or required effort on your part to see the appeal. Moe just switches on like a light on its own and is not something you have to teach yourself to tolerate.
