He's still like that in the manga. Don't pay attention to his tsundere act. He turns back and checks on Shinoa's group in chapter 40 while ignoring Krul and the agonizing Yuu in his arms. He was so concentrated he hadn't realized Krul addressed it.
He cares for the Kazoku. He's just afraid to admit it. In the manga, he told them all to run and he'll stop the chains, but Yuu insisted they should do team work.
