It's because they were badass enough to drive out the Vertexes in those unfavorable conditions, so much so that they convinced Shinju-sama that humanity should change strategies and go on the offensive, which directly connects to it returning the offerings, i.e. bodily functions. Unfortunately the show made me lose interest because the ending was handled so badly, with none of that given its due dramatic weight sufficiently early on. If they'd introduced (in framing, direction and dialogue) the possibility that something would change at least a few episodes before the ending, it might've been possible to feel good about it.
Instead it was all doom and gloom with no hope on the horizon until WHAM suddenly everything was okay and even all the sacrifices that had already been made were being refunded.
Basically the show gave me thematic whiplash and threw me out of the seat at the last minute.

As for the last episode, I can't say I agree. When I was watching the last episode my only question was HOW things would turn out okay, not WHETHER they would turn out okay. The theme of the show was never about suffering, it was always about the classic power of friendship and all, and it never gave any indication they would betray that thematic. Perhaps you went in expecting some Madoka or something because of all the memesters that kept repeating that on every corner. I was confidently watching an orthodox mahou shoujo just waiting for Yuuna to punch everything into okay.

But that's the whole point.
The way those messages were framed, the way the girls grew increasingly suspicious of their truth, the way Togo went basically insane for a while trying to commit suicide, etc, all pointed unambiguously to the Taisha considering the girls tools, expendable "for the greater good." This was actually even further confirmed by the Washio Sumi novella wherebest girlliterally died fighting.
Framing and direction are incredibly important for something like this. The same dialogue and the same "facts" can be presented in completely opposite lights with opposite implications. Right up until the end, the show tried to impress with all its might that all hope was lost, with nary a single scene or shot before that implying that there might be any actual hope remaining.
Undoing the sacrifices was really the final straw because that in particular was so strongly implied by the direction to not be something that could ever happen.

Too little too late. A story like this hinges on being able to justify its dramatic turns while watching it. Also, I did in fact read Washio Sumi novel when the chapters were coming out simultaneously with the show (and even ordered the damn print book), but that just strengthened my impression that there was no way out, because of Gin's death, and how the Taisha were so ruthless as to use Wasshii AGAIN after all that she had already gone through.

I too found the ending to be kind of unsatisfying because it came out of nowhere with no real build up. To trot out the tired comparison to Madoka, the ending of that show worked because it built upon things that had been clearly elaborated and foreshadowed before.
Yuuki Yuuna's ending does work, but only after having the intricacies of it explained to me based off of supplementary materials and a one-off joke in the series.
And I don't think the 'It's not the show's fault you didn't read the supplement' argument really works here. The show explains or reveals everything it needs to for the purposes of its own story, with the sole exception of the ending. Imagine someone told you that the ending of Mai-Hime (which this reminded me of) was perfectly fine and narratively deserved and thematically fitting, but only if you read book about a mostly different cast or played a crappy PSP game.
Supplements should be used to enhance or expand a work, not be left to fill in nonsensical gaps.

/a/ would probably love the show a lot more if there was no battle mahou shoujo stuff and it was pure CGDCT in a post/pre-apocalyptic island. I'm certain of it, actually, because I've seen anons say they want a season 2 of Madoka that's all slice of life. The SOL was my favorite part but I'd still take any story over none.

If you will consider it impartially, 3 of the greatest animes are NGE, Madoka, and K-ON. This franchise simply blended parts of them each and, rather than becoming a 2^2deep4^4u deconstruction of deconstructions, it's plain compelling entertainment with the tropes you know and love. I can't understand something about me. I really like the "Yuusha de aru" series but it has never been able to make cry. The closest I got cry was at the end of chapter 2 of NoWaYu. It took me forever to figure out which town the anime is set in, that's why I only started doing the pictures from episode 6 on. It's actually amazing how many towns there are in Shikoku that have sandy beaches, a partially dried up river with multiple bridges near its mouth and hills at their northern border.
But from there, most places were pretty easy to find. I think Karin's apartment took the longest, because it was way off from every other location in the middle of an entirely unremarkable urban area.

I think we'll probably get some more peripheral characters to expand the world-building aspect a little more. The really tight focus is great and I don't want them to lose that, but at SOME point we probably have to introduce a Taisha member as someone beyond a faceless masked mob. Given Sonoko After, we're definitely getting some more heroes, and at the very least we can expect whoever ends up in Fuu's new club to join the main cast unless she pulls a Madarame and just doesn't stop showing up at meetings. I just doubt we're going to lose the school-based setup and small-group focus, but I could easily see spinoffs about other groups and even other places depending on how the liberation effort goes, Strike Witches style.

6 characters is about my limit for 12 episode shows I actually enjoyed. So far every chapter of NoWaYu goes in depth for 1 character or showcases a relationship between 2.Side characters are quickly eliminated by the end of the chapter they're introduced.The author seems to know what he's doing and is doing it with skill. It's only because of that that he can even pull off 6 characters.
A solution would be to make the core cast captains/officers and make the grunts nameless. The anime did a good job of making all background characters nearly invisible. That's something I greatly appreciated about it.
