Watched it when I was 5 years old or something? and I remember I fell in love with it. Might be why, even now, I consider it an "OH MY GOD ULTRA SUPER MEGA HOLYSHIT GOOD" movie.
So nostalgia + there's nothing bad about the movie I can pinpoint. Also, I every time I watch it I feel like I've just entered the movie's world.
Same with other old Ghibli movies, like Spirited Away, Moving Castle, Kiki and, especially, Grave of the Fireflies.

I saw this for the first time in the summer and I'd say for modern times it's a really good movie. The message is old school but the animation is really good and the characters are strong. Not deep, but very likable. I do wish the princess got more development or screen time. At least since her name is in the title.

Thats a fair point, but as I said, its a good movie , the reason above is another one to make it good. Still, the plot(human x nature spirts, etc), the grey lines(not black and white ones or good x bad) are things that we´ve seen before, and it not presented in the film in an unique kind of way.
Its like I said, for me its a good film, but it lacks that "something" that makes it god level.

I think Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are two movies that kind of 'set the standard' for what people could expect from a studio that possessed a large pool of talent and dedication to their work. The story of Mononoke may not pop out to most people today compared to huge blockbusters, but the melding of the musical score, well selected VAs, as well as the absence of le super deep edgy takeaway tropes you see today make it something that people can look back to with or without nostalgia goggles as a prime example of what studios can do if they just try instead of adapting shitty LNs into one season wankfests.
Miyazaki is a fucking hack, he's just writes a bunch of shitty disney rip offs. The only actual good anime movie is Wolf Children.

I agree wit you about this, I also don't think that film is all that great for this reason. It feels like its trying almost too hard to give each faction excuses to fight each other while still being basically good people (except for the asshole who is genuinely irredeemable). It's almost like the idea of people not really being good or evil is presented as a ham-fisted after school lesson here, when other anime have done this better. Ultimately, the characters and their motivations just aren't all that compelling and in the end I couldn't give a shit about what anyone did.
