I'm more curious if otaku will shift to watching online instead of the industry doing TV-airing and then banking on disc and other merch sales. The focus on worldwide money might mean something, but when you only pay $84 a year for CR, all that money is pretty widely distributed amongst the 20-80+ new shows you might watch. I guess they also get money from regular ads, but I wonder what a random show really sees in terms of actual money take if they were to break it down.

What you're talking about is already very possible. Do you honestly think it's currently cheaper to include any drawings at all in this day and age? Of course not, people can crank out a 3D animu character rig in 5 hours and then all that's left to do it fucking animate the thing and reuse the model over and over. It's a stylistic choice to use traditional animation, not a financial one.
