He's got a thing for matter-of-factly describing the kind of mundane stuff most writers would choose to gloss over, dance around, or ignoring. It's the same with the sex scenes, he doesn't want to just fade to black or describe it poetically. Instead of saying a character is down with a bad stomach, he frankly states that the character is suffering from diarrhea and then details how awful the experience is. I think that's what most people are charmed by, because most of the really mainstream fantasy classics will almost have you think it's all grand adventuring and dragon-slaying all day long. I figure it's kinda like if you compared Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky against The Desolation of Smaug. I'm personally not a big fan of ASoIaF, but I think the appeal of the book series is sort of like how I've described it.

One of the reasons people like the Nasuverse is because of the world building. Differentiating between canon and non-canon is just useful because fans wanna know what to care about and what not to care about.
If you read the script for DtB season 3 and at the end you saw "disclaimer this is fanfiction OC do not steal" you might think you'd have wasted your time because you're a fan of DtB not NarutoLove113's literary work.
I love the spin-offs just as much as I like the main franchise though. Kaleid and CP are just as good. So it depends what you mean by matter.

Everything that remains consistent within the Nasuverse rules and branches off from a certain point in a primary work can be said to be canon. Only stuff like Fate Tiger Coliseum, CP and FUC which is so inconsistent with Nasuverse rules it might as well be something else aren't canon.

Well, this is a VN releases during 2004, if I'm not mistaken, and there was little hope this type of media would sell without said scenes.
You can also see it as a form of imprinting clichés concerning the harem elements of this story, i.e., a way to get Shirou involved in some sort of sex antics.
If you're not into Shirou's ideology, it is also pretty difficult to enjoy FSN since there's no choice regarding which character POV the player/reader would want to go through the story with.

Clannad seemed to move in a slow pace, and the character didn't seem appealing to me. I felt like the plot tries way too hard to make the viewer cry, I don't even dislike melodrama completely, but it must be executed at the right time and circumstances.
