So yes, you absolutely need to get your reviews down to zero every single day. You're actually making life harder on yourself by setting a review limit for purposes other than splitting your reviews up throughout the day.
If you have too many reviews for your schedule/capacity to focus, tough it out and lower the amount of new cards that you're doing every day by five.

The only circumstance where it's acceptable to hit easy is when you know the word so well that you can recognize it without even thinking about it, as if it were a word in your native tongue, and you're sure that you'll never forget it. If you can hit easy, you can basically delete the card from your deck with no consequences.
Otherwise, hit good if you get it right relatively easily, and hard if you struggle or possibly when you get it "close enough" (for example, you say きゅう when it's きょう) and when it'll just push it back less than a month.

There is no universal best way, all people have different ways of learning and necessities. I for example use Genetickanji for learning new characters and Obenkyo for doing reps while commuting
To people worried about thinking in English instead of Japanese: Get your reading skills up a bit, and then put a concentrated effort into your listening skills. If you're reading VNs, you can work on both at once, using the VN text as a transcript (a text parser can come in handy here).

If you can't understand it you can't understand it. Watching without subs isn't going to magically increase your comprehension yet sometimes subs can be useful for quick reference to check your comprehension on the fly which in turn can make it easier to deduce further surrounding things from context that you can take away and learn from.
There is no shortcut to "thinking in a language" as it ultimately boils down to dominance of comprehension in the given context. The adult brain can't simply shut down and start thinking like a child if it has already build up an extensive and complex knowledge network of concepts and meaning attributed to language. After enough continual comprehensive input you'll naturally start to focus less on things like subtitles as it is actually easier to let yourself focus on the spoken language because 1. the comprehension is there and 2. the context is easier to follow overall from the visual queues in association with what is being said.

I really don't see the appeal of sashimi. I've eaten octopus, prawn, tuna, geoduck, salmon sashimi at expensive Japanese restaurants and I just can't get into it. So I need to start learning Kanji/Vocab while practicing Grammar today (transitioning from Kana).
I grabbed Anki and the Core2K/6K deck last night and tabbed up the Tae Kim guide for grammar. Is doing these two in parallel good enough for beginner material vocab/grammar or should I add a Japanese Grammar deck to Anki to supplement?
I also need to ask if the default settings for Anki are ideal as far as reviews/new cards/intervals go. Haven't payed attention when lurking the threads earlier since I was still on Kana.
I've read Tae Kim really only covers up to beginner level grammar so I feel I should have a contingency plan once that well runs dry.
Any advice, /djt/? My compelling content awaits.

Tae Kim covers enough to start reading. You'll still encounter stuff you don't know but as long as you aren't too stupid to google or look things up there's no problem.
DOBJG deck is probably a good idea too just because people here go through tae kim fast so you need to try to actually retain a decent amount of basic grammar somehow

I started getting way less reviews, my retention rate went way up, and I started finishing way faster. If you fuck up a word in anki then anki is not the best way to learn the word. If you fail a card enough times (not in a row, but on separate days) it is called a leech. Default is 12 times, I moved it to 20 for myself. If you actually learn a word it is very unlikely you'll fail in 12 times, so leeches tend to be uncommon and especially hard words. The thing about leeches is that they only appear when you've failed to learn them through anki. Therefore, suspending them doesn't really mean a whole lot except saved time. You can unsuspend them whenever you like, too. It's important to remember that we're not talking about 1 or 2 leeches, but potentially hundreds, as they build up over time, and in groups like that simply leaving them all unsuspended is aa huge time sink.
