Just went from watching old 80s and 90s OVAs to watching the newest Dragon Ball movie.

Holy crap, why is modern animation so awful?
>>
>actually watching those dumb not even canon OVAs and movies
baka
>>
>>133917682
Because 80's/90's OVA weren't traditional anime products are to be consumed by a niche audience that would see the difference in the quality of the animation when compared to mainstream anime.

The issue is that after the success of Evangelion, the more niche animation because more "mainstream" and so they went from having months to work on a single OVA to produce series for late TV slots. The industry keep evolving and with Japan constant deflation and crisis every market started to shrink to basically become niche markets. The Japanese Otakus became the ONLY profitable market and studios started to pander to them EVEN more but on a more busy schedule.

Now do you see how and why the animation has gotten worse? Also this also happens with almost every entertainment product in Japan.
>>
>>133917682
1. Way too many studios working on way too many different shows.
2. The shit pay has driven a lot of would-be animators into other fields. The people who go into it now tend to be people really in love with anime, and they only really know how to draw anime.
3. Idolification means that voice actors command top dollar.
4. Everything is rushed. No one takes their time anymore. A product that used to be entirely made by one or two studios within driving distance now involves flip, gook and increasingly chink animators.
5. Increasing amounts of 3DCGI
>>
>>133917861
So otakus ruined everything.
>>
>>133917927
Nah more like shitty economics and a deflation that hasn't stopped in years not even with the lowest possible interest rates.

So in such a terrible economy, most japanese entertainment switched mentalities from making of everyone a customer and gaining $1 from each to suck the living shit out of their core fanbase as much as they can as fast as they can.
>>
I always thought it was odd that 80's and 90's animation looks better than today.
>>
Toei no care
>>
>>133918032
Well the fact that they used actual physical cel animation certainly helps.
>>
>>133918012
You know why it hasn't improved? Because Japanese corporations don't want to increase wages.
>>
>>133917682
>why is modern animation so awful?
Someone hasn't seen a kyoani show lately.
>>
>>133918154
Instagram filters and traced photos aren't good animation
>>
Are you people seriously comparing high budget stuff from the 80s/90s to dragonball and then cry about modern animation?
>>
>>133918154
Kyoani has top tier visual design and really has transitioned the best of any company into the digital era.
>>
>>133917861
Nah. Most of the time the shows don't even belong to the studios who animate them. It's all about manga and publishers today. They pay the studios and they are really the studios clients, not collectors/viewers.. Also, shows made for normals make LOTS more money than shows pandering to otaku.
>>
>>133918175
No but the simple effect of higher resolutions and increased graphics power in nearly all mediums of digital content creation, there's definitely a clean look to newer animated things.
>>
>Dragonball looks bad
>IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF OTAKU
I really hope no one actually believes this. If anything, it's the opposite - Dragonball looks bad because it isn't pandering to otaku, it's aimed at a much wider audience that doesn't care about visual quality that much.
>>
>>133918176
>comparing high budget stuff from the 80s/90s to dragonball
Resurrection F was made on a budget of 5 million dollars, bruh.
>>
>>133918316
If it was, that's hilarious, but it doesn't change the fact that Dragonball is bottom-of-the-modern-barrel and Gunbuster or whatever OP watched was top-tier for both its time and ours.
>>
>>133918176
Older DBZ films look far better than the new ones.
>>
So how many times stronger did Freezer get in those 4 months of training?
>>
When will people just finally admit to themselves that digital is just innately inferior to cel? Only heavily stylized Kyoni stuff is even passable while everything else looks like dog shit - way too crisp, little shading, fewer colors.
>>
>>133918363
That's nice, except for the fact that old DBZ films like Dead Zone look a million times better than Resurrection F. Face it, budgets have inflated and technique has worsened.
>>
>>133918416
>fewer colors
>innately inferior
Do you know what "innately" means?
>>
>>133917682
>Holy crap, why is modern animation so awful?
It isn't you just have shit taste senpai.
>>133918372
>Older DBZ films look far better than the new ones
Kek
>>
>>133918450
Yes. All else being equal (same budget, same talent) digital will look worse than work done on cel.
>>
>>133918443
Movie 13 was a beautiful DBZ movie and it came out in 1995 or so, which is now over 20 years ago.
>>
>>133918443
I haven't seen old Dragonball stuff since I was a kid, so I'll assume you're right about it looking worse, but I can assure you that current Dragonball is not at all representative of current standards.

>>133918492
>same talent
I'd say that using too few colors is clearly an indication that you're not that talented.
>>
>>133917682
>why is modern animation so awful?
Animator salaries stay the same
Cost of living increases
Difficulty of animating high quality doesn't decrease that much, still requires decent skill

So they find short cuts for everything and sacrifice everywhere they can to make up for the fact that they can't keep skilled workers because skilled workers will find jobs elsewhere where they get real salaries.
>>
>>133918537
Why is the cost of living increasing when the economy isn't growing, the population is aging, and wages are going up?
>>
>>133918524
>Movie 13 came out in 1995
Man, dragon ball is pretty old.
>>
>>133918537
You do realize that short cuts and slave work have been the motto of the anime industry for fifty years, right?
>>
>>133918456
BoG looked pretty decent. It was just RF that had some bad cuts.
>>
>>133918552
jews did it
>>
>>133918552
Property values is a huge one. Only so many places to live, but new people are entering the market every year.

Look at california. People making 150K a year, but they spend 75K-100K after taxes just to live there.

Basically owning land is the best thing you can ever do
>>
>>133917682
Because you're watching anime made by Toei

/thread
>>
>>133918456
Holy fuck, I made a mistake to miss on BoG but watched RF.
>>
>>133918443
TOEI
O
E
I
>>
>>133918537
>still requires decent skill
this. the animators of those old 80s and 90s OVAs are retired or too old to do something notable and the new generation of animators would rather work for a new anime studio than working for toei

I don't think the latest Dragon Ball is a good representation of modern anime
>>
>>133919462
Where do they hide the Kyousogiga team, anyway? Or were those all freelancers?
>>
>>133920560
Yeah. It should be Sailor Moon Crystal or Saint Seiya Omega.
Thank you Toei.
>>
Big name series sell well regardless of quality because of how massive they are and their ever growing legacy. So they continually pump out week by week and after decades the old guys in suits are content and probably don't care about how faithful or strong an adaption is as long as the money is consistent.

One Piece is another example of this by Toei

>>133917919
>>133917927
When Hayao Miyazaki said it, everyone called him a grumpy babyboomer disconnected from his audience. Truth hurts.

>He didn't watch BoG
What the fuck nigga? It's literally the best movie

It's literally not.

They left Toei.

they're the ones keeping this alive, you ungrateful fucks

I would rather it just died if all the future will consist of is LN/harem adaptations and porn. Most things that differ from the above don't tend to sell very much anyway. It's been a good run, but unfortunately all things eventually must come to an end. There's always manga.

And I respect your opinion.

dragon ball is just shit anyway
>>
Because nobody gives a fuck any more. The fans, the people making it, Toriyama. Nobody.
>>

They learned how to use adobe After Effects.
>>
>>133921217
>LN/harem adaptations and porn
this is already dying off, you need to fear more the idoru menace or the recent browser games popularity with otakus and fujoshis
>>
>>133917682
Because its cheaper?
>>
>>133921217
>Most things that differ from the above don't tend to sell very much anyway
Yeah, Madoka and Fate and GuP and UtaPri sold nothing, right?
