I suppose the greatest criticism you can make of HSOTD is it has an inconsistent tone, and fails to break from the cliches of anime. It looks at all the reasons why anime isn't respected as a genre or medium, and instead of disposing of those sores, it merely "Embraces" them, failing to realize that they will only hold it back.
You cannot "embrace" cliché. That's like saying "I've embraced my terminal brain cancer."
The only way to avoid cliché is to make the consumer forget that it is cliché.
HSOTD actually did a pretty good job of this with their zombies for a while. That went out the window eventually but it is of course admirable that at least at first the show could make me forget that zombies are in literally fucking everything. They also did it with fanservice for a while.

I did. It focused fairly well on on the initial chaos of the outbreak which, in my opinion, is the most interesting point of any zombie scenario. So many series in the zombie genre base their stories on the point of long term survival where the world is already dead and don't put much emphasis on when everything is going to shit and how people initially deal with that situation.
Also, Saeko is a best.
