Most of the official KanColle stuff is pretty awful, with some really edgy as fuck light novels, and some pretty horrible manga like the Shimakaze one. The anime is probably the worst of the official stuff, which sucks because it's probably the most canon out of all of them. Really, just play the game if you want a mind numbing time sink and read the 4koma manga.

Just start with the anime. It's not great, but you won't realize how shit it actually is if you know nothing about KanColle. It'll just give you a good primer and introduction to the characters. Then when you're done, prepare to reevaluate everything you learned.

The movie will probably be fine in terms of quality--dropping the ball on a big-name movie would have horrid repercussions for diomedea. I wouldn't expect anything special in terms of writing or any promises with S2 though.

At least the anime showed us what the girls are like outside of the Admiral's office. Fubuki is sempai crazy, Kongou is a lovable idiot who is also a great councilor, Kongou's sisters are borderline retarded(especially Haruna), Mutsu is a huge siscon(or whatever it is between sister ships), Oi and KTM are practically married, Shimakaze is super autistic, and Wo doesn't talk, since she is a engine of destruction powered by the souls of dead ship girls. Oh and the memes.
