Sorry if this is posted in the guide, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Is there a site or program that will output the correct stroke order in .gifs like this one? http://www.sp.cis.iwate-u.ac.jp/icampus/u/akanji.jsp Except, rather than adding in each stroke in its entirety, it draws it in so that one can be sure of the direction of the strokes as well? I have a decent idea of the correct directions, but I'd like to be certain.

What I do is just learn how to say the word, and register the rough meaning along with it when doing my reps. Then when I encounter said word while reading or listening I'll recall what it means.

I can't imagine learning the translation every time, especially when most words classed as 'verbal nouns' on anki don't have a straight translation.

Working through conditionals at the moment, and I came across this:

先生だと、きっと年上なんじゃないですか?
If he's a teacher, he must be older for sure, right?

The inclusion of じゃない is what's throwing me off here. Could someone help explain this to me? I thought it would mean something closer to "if he's a teacher, he mustn't be older for sure, right?" even though that's a bit awkward.
>>
>>133619140
It's like saying 'right?' or 'isn't it?'
>>
>>133619140
Think of じゃない as "don't you think?" It's a negative rhetorical.
>>
>>133619140
If you translate
先生だと、きっと年上なんじゃないですか?
Into: If he's a teeacher, he must be older for sure, isn't that right?
It'd be like expressing the following:
先生だと、きっと年上です。そうじゃないですか?
>>
>>133619275
Oh hey, that's a really good way to think about it. Thanks.

Do you guys get overly affected by anime? After finishing Glass Mask I want to go see a play or at least read the script of one. I wanted to go see an orchestra and learn how to play the piano after watching Nodame Cantabile and I wanted to see a ballet after Princess Tutu. Of course, I never end up doing any of these things because I would have to leave the house.

One time after finishing a Gundam series I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer.

I wish I could become passionate about something in my life.

I wonder if we appear fluent to Japanese people, when we email short messages like:
どちらでもいいですよ
It's short, and is practically a staple sentence that any Japanese person would say. So, if we just send a sentence like that... I would if, the receiver would extrapolate us to be fluent.
For example, if I emailed someone in Japanese
>Do you prefer cats or dogs?
And they replied
>I like them both.
I would definitely think they're like, fluent, even if they would have said "When dogs comes to loud cat but quieter slight preference".

Hey DJT, I've finally motivated myself to actually try and learn Japanese today.

So I've been using realkana for the past few hours, trying to memorize Hiragana. But I'm not sure what to do exactly.

Am I supposed to memorize the hiragana first, or the pronunciation of it first?
>>
>>133621157
How else would you memorize the except for the pronunciation?

Water is always my true lover, and is the perfect one for me. Its up to me for being happy and water keeps me healthy. I love water and being happy, alcohol is just emulating my water and happiness. Yep, learned riichi mahjong after watching Akagi and Saki. Still would have been playing it with local weeb friends if they didn't move out of town one after another. Tried learning igo after Hikaru no Go but it was like chess on crack and I am terrible at keeping track of multiple things at once so I gave up. Tsumego are fun litle things though, I enjoy solving them from time to time.
Also tried learning guitar after watching Beck but gave up. I've found a very convinient line somewhere - "Truly great musicians often don't learn to play musical instruments at all because they are disgusted by their ineptitude while learning and stop before they can git gud". I do want to learn some musical instrument after "finishing" with japanese though.
Started a first kendo club in my city after watching Bamboo Blade. We had to ask trainers from a neighbouring town to come over and hold full day seminars once a month and train independently in the meantime. The club is going strong for 7th year now, people pass their dan exams, all that jazz. Even made it to the nationals once. Regrettably I had to stop training due to illness a couple of years ago.
I now realise that anime had an unexpectedly positive influence on my life. New hobbies, new experiences, new friends. Who would have thunk.

So I'm currently studying Japanese at one of the top Tokyo universities.

Last term I had four courses: comprehesive which consisted of memorising a textbook chapter per night and then doing mind numbing "games" for 3 hours, in between being retaught the chapter we had already learnt and had been tested on first thing. This course completely ignored kanji, yet worked through N5/4. The next course was kanji, which consisted of being given a random list of about 50 words to memorise and learn to write each week, with no instruction as to radicals, stroke order or any sensical kanji learning order. Note, these words had no relation to the comprehensive course. The last two "theme" courses consisted of lists of theme words to memorise each week, also with random kanji.

This term: more comprehensive, where we work through a textbook in class. Fair enough, but it's at a much slower pace than I could do it by myself. This course also expects you to know kanji that wasn't taught in the previous comprehensive course. More theme classes, all as useless as last term.

In additon, as it is a university, there are advanced students taking beginner/lower intermediate classes just for the credits. This means that everyone taking the correct level is left feeling dumb and too shy to speak out in class. Not a great learning atmosphere.

Honestly, I was really close to not coming back for my second term. My university is costing double what a regular language school would. I really wish I had just gone to a regular school.

I took a language course for a different language previously in my home country at university. We spent the classes going through level appropriate native videos, audio files and working through the textbook. The class moved at a good pace.

Has anyone else taken a university course here in Japan and felt the same way? Am I just expecting too much?

You have to consider that when you come here you're taking learning advice from NEETs. Not the best idea. They go for Tae Kim because it's free and simple.
>>
>>133629271
Genki can also be free. The problem with Genki is that it's disruptive to the study flow of most self-learners. Its quality is a little higher than Tae Kim aside from that, but it's not enough to make up for it.
>>
>>133629295
>disruptive to the study flow
Really?
>>
>>133629330
Ask a neet whose first material was genki and went in blind.
>>
>>133629271

>NEETs

As compared to college students who spend two years at a sub-JLPT N3 level?

A NEET is perfectly capable of pirating Genki. Furthermore, consider the pressure that these topics put on people to read native material. If Tae Kim wasn't going to get you to a point where you could get started on reading, we wouldn't recommend it.

Grammar guides are something that you should get through quickly. Then, you start reading native material, and use the grammar guide as a reference when you don't understand something. Tae Kim + DoJG (don't use it as a text book; use it as a reference when you don't understand something) is just what a serious learner needs.

Someone posted the very last exercise in Genki 2 the other day. I used Tae Kim to learn my grammar, and then started reading native material, and I can tell you that it was embarrassingly simple, beneath anything that you'd encounter in real Japanese. So trust me, Tae Kim is fine.

Guys... why do I keep putting off studying? At first, in high school, I learned all the kana, a few hundred words, and basic grammar, then stopped. After high school I thought I got my act together and learned about a thousand words, most of them from the core6k deck, but stopped again. Then I learned the Yotsuba&! deck, read it, felt really good and thought I finally got it together and would learn Japanese... then I went to 2chan and I couldn't understand them and I stopped again out of depression. Then I started AGAIN and learned a few hundred kanji, another few hundred words, signed up at LingQ and learned a few hundred more words... then I stopped again after my subscription ended.

It's not even that studying is boring, I love studying, I just... why do I keep stopping? I've been at this for over 8 years now, guys. I'm disappointed in myself. Don't become like me, don't put it off again and again. I could have learned so much Japanese, maybe even a few more languages by now. But instead I'm still N5, MAYBE N4 level... I'm the worst to come out of /DJT/.

I'll definitely do it this time, wish me luck guys! I CAN LEARN JAPANESE! がんばれ!

And this is why you absolutely never skip a day.

A day turns into two days, which turns into a week, which turns into a habit of procrastination, which turns into stopping altogether.

Goddamn.

Anon, seriously: Go download Hanahira and Chiitrans Lite right this second. Read that shit for at least an hour every day until you've finished it. Actively try to remember words that you encounter, and if you don't understand the grammar, reference DoJG. Attempt to read from the game itself before using any dictionary tools provided by the text hooker.

>But it's sooo hard!

Suck it up. You're not going to be perfect at first. That comes later.

>It's boring!

Grab a more interesting-looking VN, then. Power through that instead.

>The mean people on DJT will laugh at me for using a text hooker.

Fuck them. Are you looking to impress some autist, or are you looking to learn Japanese? If you care about the former, you really shouldn't. At any rate, I'm sure that even those autists would agree that using a text hooker is better than what you're doing right now.

>What do I do after I finish?

You get through another VN.
>>
>>133630940
>>The mean people on DJT will laugh at me for using a text hooker.
wut? Why would anyone frown on texthooker usage? I mean you should neck yourself if you can't do without it after years of reading vns back to back, but at the start it saves a shitload of time.

>>
>>133631051

Some anons like to point out that it's possible to use it as a crutch, as if that's decisive evidence that you WILL use it as a crutch. Also, they claim that if you're making use of any tools to assist, you're not actually reading Japanese.

Yes, it's not a terribly rational argument, but notice that I called them "autists".
>>
>>133631243
I'm an autist and I don't find it offensive when you call belligerent shitheads autistic, but I really wish that we could get away with insulting them using the term aspergers or aspie like they are.
>>
>>133631324
Oh yeah, "sperging" exists, we should use that more often.
>>
>>133631324

Lots of people on this site have autism, and the term is commonly used as an insult. Looking into semantics for reasons to be offended is a bad habit. Look at intent instead.

At any rate, autists who aren't well adjusted to their disorder tend to be very tunnel-visioned and belligerent, so the insult fits.

what is the name of the text hooker that you use?
>>
>>133631051
There are some people who have seen screenshots of machine translators and think that is what text hookers are. Others think that being able to instantly look up a word is a bad thing and they would rather look everything up by radical search or drawing them.

Unfortunately beginners don't know these people are retarded and sometimes get turned off one of the most useful tools for learning Japanese.

How do people manage to memorize all the grammar concepts on Tae Kim at once?

I'm close to the end of the essential grammar section, but I can't imagine going any further and being able to recall anything even semi-decently.
>>
>>133633142
Start reading.
>>
>>133633142
You don't, it gets reinforced when you come across them while consuming native material (i.e.: chinese cartoons)

>>
>>133633176

>>
>>133633176

Don't try to memorize 100% of it flawlessly via the grammar guide. This is a common beginner's mistake. Not only is it an inefficient use of your time, it also doesn't prepare the learner as well as they'd hoped, since real Japanese isn't as neat and clean as what the grammar guide gives you.

It's far more efficient to quickly finish the grammar guide and then go in with whatever you happen to know. When you don't understand something, use the grammar guide as a reference. I actually recommend looking to DoJG for this part instead of Tae Kim. Through a mixture of checking the guides and raw experience, you'll gain an intuitive grasp on grammar.
>>
>>133633304
I agree, by experiencing actual material, you'll learn grammar more easily because it'll have actual meaning, plus, the context will help you recall and solidify the meaning.
頑張って!

A config like that is going to be inferior to running MPC+MadVR. Here's my config because why not:
