Fundamentals cannot magically make you able to do absolutely anything with the default brush. You can make decent artwork sure, but if you are going for a desired graphical effect, especially in the case of line art when line weight, composition etc are important to the design, it is crucial. The settings also help make things faster, and easier on you when you want to get work done quickly, instead of wasting time attempting to emulate a specific brush effect with the default circle brush.

here are the settings I used for the spray settings. With just the spray settings alone you won't be able to achieve the effect you're looking for so be sure to use this along with the settings found in "Brush Tip" or however it's called for you cause the translation for this program is so-so.
Something to keep in mind is that if you want to make a spray brush for pencil effects, not only would you have to change the brush size, but also the particle size as well.
Like the pic says, the brush size itself acts as a 'cage' for the particles emitted by the spray, it should not go beyond the borders of your brush size. If you wanted to change the actual brush size then you'd want to tweak the particle size.
If you want to get a more natural looking brush, or at least prevent it from looking like a stamp brush because of repetitive looking strokes then you can throw in a high value for "random" (the random values are inverse, so 0 is full random and 100 is no random)

Also, if you find that your lighter strokes are getting "fuzzy" then just change the 'brush size' minimum. pic related is the best I can explain it.
A little tweaking is needed, but really for this you just have to get a feel for it cause it's up to you whether a stroke looks okay to you or not.

Sorry if this is a foolish question, but the artist in the reference was drawing in a monochrome layer. The brush you gave seems to lose its look since apparently there is no opacity in monochrome layer. Is there no way to work around this to achieve the desired affect in such a later or to just draw finer details in separate layer.
