It depends on how you interpret the scene. It was a well-crafted romantic bit of narrative. Chitanda doesn't talk about her herself with everyone but she's talking about her burden and ties to the land. For a brief moment, Houtarou wanted to share that with her. He also understood Satoshi's fear of falling in love. If you think about it they went really far, but it's a long time before they jump into bed.
