I am just about finished with the first BD box, absolutely amazing anime. I have read up to volume 9 of the 15 volume edition of the manga, so that I can see how the anime adapts the chapters, and I have to say, the anime just improves on it 100 fold, there is no comparison. The manga is good but the anime is amazing.
Pic related for example, they took this okay chapter about the cat lady, and turned it into an Ashita no Joe parody, and it was great.

Am I the only one who thinks the voice acting in this series is fantastic? Each one fits his/her character perfectly, and they all have a certain charm you just don't get these days.
It's refreshing to watch a series without hearing voices I've heard in about 50 different anime.

Pretty much everybody agrees that everything about the anime is fantastic and something special. Urusei Yatsura was a cultural institution/phenomenon in the 80s, and then Ranma did it again. Re-watch episodes 24 and 25, and you should notice my problem.
24 is the body-swapping earmuffs episode, and a perfect example of everything great about the series up to that point: great situation-based comedy complemented by snappy pacing and surprisingly witty writing.
25 is the caterpillar episode, and it's basically nothing but slapstick for the whole 20 minute duration. While slapstick has always been a part of the show, and was used very effectively up to episode 24, in this episode, it feels extremely dragged out and awkward. The segment where Ataru is running away from his classmates cue to slapstick should've only lasted a minute (as it would have earlier on); instead, it lasts about 10.
Episodes 26, 27, 28 and 29 suffer from the same problems: too slow and rely way too heavily on slapstick. 30 is good, but 31, 32 and 33 suffer the same problems. I remember the scene in the library episode where they're cleaning up the books; it just goes on and on and on, complete with painfully obvious recycled cels. Without the snappy pacing, the humor dries up fast.

I'm in the mid 40s right now, working my way to the first movie if I have the viewing order worked out correctly in my head. Anyway, I'm glad I'm watching it; I even got the old issues of the manga when they were being printed in a fashion similar to comic books (in terms of formatting, sizing, and the fact that you read them left to right). I've done the same with Patlabor, Dominion/Tank Police, BubbleGum Crisis, etc. What convinced me to start into it was the fact that in Star Trek, I read that a ship was named after the show, and the fact that fans enjoyed it so much that they went to such great lengths to have it shown on TV stations abroad of Japan, like when an American group calling themselves "Lum's Stormtroopers" convinced a station in California to run the show. So worth it.

UY, Ranma, and Maison Ikkoku reallt don't have that much in common. The style of humor is the same, obviously, they are written by the same person.
I don't know, to me they all feel like completely separate things. It is obvious that for Ranma Rumiko took some concepts and character ideas from Ranma, but I think they are both pretty distinct.
There is an occasional UY arc that feels like it could have been a Ranma arc (the introduction of Ryuunoske for example), but overall the content is just so different.
The fact that somebody could hate one and like the other is proof. Thing about Ranma is that everybody is an asshole all the time, in UY most of the characters are crazy, but not nearly as dickish.
And although it is obvious, the distinction of Sci-fi/Japanese Folklore and Gender Bender/Martial arts is pretty distinct too.
As for Maison Ikkoku, well, first off it is a lot less wacky and crazy. Additionally there is an actual, logical passage of time, and it has a lot less characters, and WAYYY more drama and misunderstanding.

I reread Ranma right after Urusei Yatsura. "Ancient Chinese Legend" was basically a replacement for crazy stuff from space. The biggest difference are the few battle arcs, which have no equivalent in Urusei Yatsura. There's also the art style too, especially comparing the anime. Ranma's resembles more a generic anime.

You know there's this show called Keroro Gunsou or Sgt Frog.
Episodes are made of two short stories most of the time, but they make it work by making some reference between them.
It kinda feels like UY sometimes, I recommend it.

Urusei Yatsura was funnier than Nichijou, but Nichijou was pretty funny as well. It also doesn't just have funniness going for it but also all the cute moments as well. Combined with the huge production values, it comes really close to Urusei Yatsura for best series in my opinion.
