Images to represent cinematography is like books to represent Shakespeare's plays.

Retarded.

Cinematography is an offshoot of photography. Also, have you never been in one of these threads before? This is always how they go.
>>
>>118685013
>Cinematography is an offshoot of photography

It's a completely separate thing. By definition, photography has no motion.
>>
>>118685053
Neither does cinematography. It's a series of still images, which are what make up films and/or animation. As such, pictures are an effective way of showing some degree of cinematography. Are you retarded?

This is an IMAGE board, not a VIDEO board, so cinematography threads here have always been compilations of still images.
>>

>>
Next time call it "composition" and hopefully avoid this dumb debate.
>>
>>118685117
>Neither does cinematography

No anon, it is. CINEMA is a word that comes from the roots of movement. And a series of still images when placed together creates the illusion of movement, just like a photograph creates the illusion of whatever it is a photograph of.

Also, you seem to have forgotten about webms. But that seems to be the case for you imbeciles.
>>
>>118685243
Photography teaches many of the same principles as cinematography. Camera shots, whether in film or photography, operate off of the same shit a lot of the time. Wide shots, full shots, close ups, and how that synergizes with the scene. The camera is not always constantly in motion.

And the reason nobody would use webms all the time is because you can only express a single scene of cinematography in one webm, not to mention the pain in the ass it is to encode one. Simple collages express a bunch of the techniques used in an anime, and there are loads of them that have been made. Why don't you go bitch to the people who made them considering that they're constantly posted in "cinematography" threads on /a/.

Why must we sperg over semantics when it's obvious what the thread is supposed to be about?

>>118685240
Who the fuck cares? Everyone knows what OP meant.
>>
>>118685527
>because you can only express a single scene of cinematography in one webm

And you can't even do that in an image.

>The camera is not always constantly in motion.

But the SUBJECTS of the camera, ARE in motion. And that changes everything. And then when the camera itself is in motion, when it weaves around the subjects, moving here to there, moving around to focus on the important parts without the need for cuts, it creates an effect that photography can't even compare to.

Basically faggot, you are a fuckwit who doesn't even appreciate cinematography.

>sperg over semantics

Even more an example of shit taste. You're probably one of the fuckwits who uses the term "animes" too, no doubt.

Fuck off.
>>
>>118686027
What the fuck did you just say about me? I have a Master's Degree in Filmmaking from Yale, you fucking piece of shit. I know more about cinematography than you will in your entire lifetime, shitstain.
>>
>>118683732
Always have enjoyed the Rei bookends.
>>
>>118684571
Of course, but you can examine the shot composition of a film by using still images, just like you can examine the writing of a play using the script.

There's no need to be so petty.

>>118686468
Maybe you should go back and re-do it then.
>>
>>118686027
>But the SUBJECTS of the camera, ARE in motion.

Not him but

that isn't cinematography, it's animation. At least in the case of anime.

>And then when the camera itself is in motion, when it weaves around the subjects, moving here to there, moving around to focus on the important parts without the need for cuts, it creates an effect that photography can't even compare to.

And this doesn't always happen. Some shots are camera angles, not moving shots, in anime. Key word being some, meaning the OP's term cinematography wasn't all-encompassing for all elements of cinematography. Pictures are enough to capture SOME cinematography, just look at the images posted in this thread. You can't argue the images in those collages aren't examples of cinematography.

In short, cinematography is just the film equivalent of photography, or maybe better defined as photography in motion. It extends to simply "shots" in a film or animation, and also the camera work. Obviously the images posted in this thread were of the former.

>>118686746
Thank you, that's the term I was looking for. Shot composition, which is an element of cinematography, is probably what the thread is supposed to be about.

That said, it'd be better to drop the debate and just post examples.
>>
>>118684571
That Anno cuts always give me a goosebumps.
>>
>>118686877
>You can't argue the images in those collages aren't examples of cinematography

That is exactly what I am arguing.

>cinematography is just the film equivalent of photography

The film equivalent of photography must have motion anon, otherwise it's still photography. You need to pay attention.

If you want an example of what I am talking about here >>118686027 when I talk about the movement of the camera look at this video from between 0:25 to 0:34.

http://youtu.be/-IuBg6jF0HI?t=23s

It's not anime, but it's a good example of my point that motion is completely important when talking about cinematography. If the camera was still and doing still shots the entire time, it wouldn't have anywhere near the same effect.
>>
>>118687097
I'd like to hear your argument against >>118686746

Are you going to say that shot composition isn't an aspect of cinematography? That's basically what the pictures are.
>>
>>118685198
Anno may be a troll who hates all his fans, but he's a very good director.

Composition AND motion are elements of cinematography. Remove motion, and all you have is a photo.

Anyway I'll leave you guys in peace in your thread about composition. I've said my bit, anything else would just be me having to repeat myself to those who can't read.

>>
the first episode of fsn had nice cinematography. Can't say the same for the ones that followed though.
>>
What's the difference between a well directed episode and an episode with good cinematography?
>>
>>118691045
Cinematography is just visual. Direction can encompass anything.

I don't know a ton about anime production though, so I may be wrong. This is just what I'd assume.

I'm sure they have much to do with each other though.
>>
>>118691045
For good cinematography you need a good director of photography and for well directed episode you need a competent director and a good team working with him.

No, Bakemonogatari was directed by Tatsuya Oishi and Nisemonogatari (along with all following Monogatari sequels) was directed by Tomoyuki Itamura. Shinbo slaps his name on every Shaft show, but he isn't the actual director for, well, anything they do. His work there is more akin to a producer.

Use your brain, and google, a little. Of course Shinbo has directed stuff. He's directed since the 90's and has used several aliases, one of which he used to direct hentai. Now, he's like a mentor to all the directors at SHAFT. His influence on the industry is pretty noticeable since he trains so many people.
