Yeah, but you gotta realize that the series doesnt try to take itself too seriously.
Its got good scale where you see the adventure build and build until it spirals outward into something bigger than can be percieved. Something that is visually and thematically represented and is the big plot point.
Its really fun, pure gainax stuff.

All three you pointed out are good but berserk is one of my favs tied with Vagabond(which is also on hiatus).
And OPM isn't long anon.
I found it in 2012 so I haven't suffered as much as oldfags did, but you have to be a patient man as Miura is erratic in releasing chapters.(Same as Togashi)
Read it from beginning to the end and it is a good journey, download from bakabt(dark horse translations).
