I just finished the Dressrosa arc. Maybe I'm just finally getting really tired of the One Piece formula, but I didn't feel emotionally invested in this. I wasn't at the edge of my seat like I've been in prior big conflicts in the story.
It's probably the best story arc to date with all of the awesome characters (good guys and bad guys) who were introduced, they're all incredibly memorable and I'm sure most of them are going to be seen again (not simply filler characters this time around). Also, so much deep and emotional shit happened, like all the fucked up shit Doflamingo did to the people of Dressrosa controlling King Riku, so many of them being turned into toy slaves, enslaved Tontatta, Kyros / Rebecca's story, Law / Corazon story.
I should be in tears and should've been like "YES, LUFFY, SMASH THAT SON OF A BITCH WITH YOUR OVERSIZED BLACK FIST," but I'm kinda meh right now.
I feel like One Piece plateaued after Ace's Execution and has been less and less interesting to me ever since.

And One Piece really is one of the better manga series. Who else can name a manga/anime that's still chugging along with so many fans and readers 20 years later? Dragonball and Naruto are just shells of what they were in the beginning. Other long-running franchises like Pretty Cure and Gundam are still popular but they always have different casts/storylines every season. Detective Conan and Lupin are still alright but not as well known/popular and are more or less episodic.

I found it kinda strange how Doflamingo was so strong. I don't think he has had a fight this intense in his entire life, while Luffy has had countless near-death experiences in all of the big fights he has been in. I feel like his family has always stepped in whenever Doffy has ever gotten a little bit hurt.
People are going to say "Doffy is strong because he can mend his wounds using his string powers, he wields conqueror haki, and has an awakened devil fruit power." To summarize what I want to say, One Piece gives you a long and fulfilling story that can go on and be successful forever. It accomplishes the goal of having a large and memorable list of characters of which we all love. In a lot of stories I have enjoyed, after completing I felt this emptiness as I did not want it to end. One Piece corrects this perfectly. It has an amazing plot involving the One Piece, "D", the WG and the nobles. This is what I consider it's "main" plot. However, this plot is not rushed and often takes a backseat. This allows subplots, which are all extremely fulfilling, to happen. Subplots like Enies Lobby, or the Summit War Arc are long enough to be stand alone stories. Oda perfectly creates a story in which I will always want more and he always provides. Half of what I watched does not even seem relevant to the main plot but I know that once this story is completed, everything will come full circle. That is why One Piece is the best story ever told. It has the potential to never end, still be meaningful while making you laugh and cry, has an amazing main plot that is filled with equally amazing subplots, and the characters are some of the biggest icons in the world. I am just happy I can witness this story as it unfolds still.

Edit 2: By best story I am not talking books. I mean as far as anime/manga. However, I do believe that it has the potential to stand up with even the great authors. As someone said though. The truth is that they approve of the bad piracy, it makes pirates look bad, it makes the government look good.
They want to eliminate all the pirates like Luffy. Many Marines disagree but it doesn't matter.
All of the strawhats are orphans because the world is in such a shitty state of constant war and pillaging and rape that being an orphan is common.
If you try and research the history of your own world, the consequence will be the that the WG will come and commit genocide against your entire nation and place 80 million dead or alive bounties on any children who survive.

The formula is tired and Oda drags out long arcs like that with the same "oh no! we're a bunch of meaningless side character victims with a sob story that you probably don't really care about but we're jobbing to show you how evil the bad guy is" and "look at all the side fights that drag on while you wait for Luffy to finally get to business."

Agreed Oda needs to edit it down a little bit.
The shorter arcs like Shabondy and Zou (some of my fave) are great because a lot of information is doled out in such a short amount of time all while building to a quick climax.
Having said that W7/EL are the top for me. It's really long sure but at the core of the plot are characters I really care about ie the Straw Hats.
This is why Dressrosa falls flat, although some individual pieces like Dofla and Laws flashbacks, G4, Fujitora are fucking great. It's that there are so many other plotlines and characters jumping for screentime and over 100 chapters it becomes a little exhausting.

The gomu gomu fruit was really important to Shanks, otherwise he wouldn't have been hiding for over a year in east blue.
It seems unlikely that Shanks was as strong then as he is now, though it was pretty clear he was already a very famous and strong pirate who should have no issues with the lord of the coast.
Fact is he could have haki'd his arm but using that concentration to do so would have made him just a millisecond too slow to save Luffy's life.
Similarly, when Kenshin fights his master to obtain the ultimate technique, he has to use all of his concentration to land a hit on his master, falling on his ass once he succeeds, and then is given the ultimate technique.

I think the best thing One Piece has going for it is its structure. It won't feel DBZ-like in the sense that all of the major power-players have been introduced. Sure, their fights will get more outlandish and extravagant, but having that end set in stone helps conceptualize their abilities more, if that makes sense.
Like, Gear 4 was sort of expected and didn't feel like a major asspull because we saw Marineford and the strongest admirals act. A lot of people said, 'there's no way Luffy can handle these guy at his current level'. So to see him grow past his thresholds wasn't a great surprise.
So, it may follow DBZ in terms of crazy fights, but at least we know what to expect.
