I don't want any popular studio like SHAFT, Kyoani, Trigger or whatever to make it because they would ruin it with shitty jokes and poorly placed fanservice.

I want to see a Dune adaptation in the style of Five Star Stories.

One major thing is getting Paul's character right. The low budget Sci-Fi series really fucked him up in my eyes by making him so rash and angry when the book had him very cold and detached in the beginning. The Lynch movie actually had a great cast and great sets, it just tried to condense the story in dumb ways and the changes to what the "weirding way" is was dumb.

The time of getting an actual good Dune anime adaptation is past though IMO. the old super detailed cel based animation style of the late 80s and early 90s would have been perfect for it, as would the format of an OVA series like LOGH or even a shorter OVA series like Arslan.

I'd simply love to see that series done like Bahamut, visually. I want my animated Quick Ben and Sapper Squads blowing shit to bits.

As for novels I'd like to see done, Zelazny's stuff comes to mind. Lord of Light would make for glorious material, with an inspired director behind it. And his Amber Chronicles would work well too, Corwin's half at least.

The Night's Dawn trilogy would be great but it would have to be 4 cour at the very minimum to be worth a damn.

Live-action Dune movies will always portray Paul as too old and too tall. An anime might, maybe, probably not but it would be good to give it a try, do a half-decent job of adapting the first book. There's no way Leto II ever gets a good adaptation.

I know the compilation you're talking about. At first it seems overwhelming, but his style is easy to get into and you'll burn through it in no time. A real shame Zelazny died before he could finish the whole epic. The 2 main story arcs that we got are pretty self contained, but there was more to come from what I've read.

You're an idiot. The Fremen are savages, that's the whole fucking point. >Damn, /a/'s full of mentally retarded children. Who would have guessed?

I'm open to discussion on whether or not I should pick Dune back up. I get there's a reason why so many people like it, I'm just having a hard time seeing it. I also can appreciate that the world is probably great once you get into it, but I can't get over the way characters interactions are so forced and over the top. It just feels awkward and unnatural (again, at least for the first 1/4 of the first book.)

>>116119401

Dune is incredible. Absolutely incredible. But if you don't like completely ridiculous cheesy sci-fi don't read it. It really does get almost pulp. However, the sheer scale of the story and the universe portrayed, all of the different characters and motivations and factions - it is an extremely well put together and somehow convincing universe. Not to mention it works as a cheesy pulp space opera, or if you want to be pretentious, look at it as some sort of commentary on the environment and not only humanity's impact on it but the environment's impact on people. I could go on. It is great.

The first book, that is. I love most of the preceding books actually written by Frank Herbert but they get even more absurd and I can't really begin to imagine any deeper meaning in them. Still love them, though.

Not as an anime, but I'd fucking love to see Suzuki Nakaba do a manga adaption of The 3 Musketeers and The Man In The Iron Mask in his current style from NnT. D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, Aramis, moe Claudette, Richelieu looking like old Helbram and all of this in his over the top style. It would be such a perfect fit.

Sure I can. It was the first and remains one of the best science fiction books centered around ecology. The pacing of the book is good, Herbert does an excellent job of bringing the society of the Fremen, Dune overall, and the power struggle between the Emperor, the Landsraad, the Spacing Guild, and the Bene Gesserit (and later the Tleilax) to life. The characters aren't all archetypes (or at least they weren't when they were written), and the ones that were archetypes, such as Paul, didn't magically change from young adults into superhero God Emperors overnight. The future universe being devoid of AI and instead reliant on human brains was also unique.

Sure, Paul Atreides is a Mary Sue, what with his ability to access all of his ancestral memories instead of just the female ones, but I'm not going to hold that against the author because Paul lived miserably and died horribly.
>>116118874
Again, I can forgive the author because Leto II's life was boring, miserable, and he refused to save himself from death.
>>116118922
>Savages
They are a group of people that lived in the wilds of a death-world for millennia and they were marginalized by every planetary ruler they had until the most recent one turned out to be their prophesied savior. They aren't savages, but trying to prevent a group like that from conquering after millennia of oppression would be fucking impossible. And Paul didn't fear the rule of the golden tyrant coming to pass, he feared BECOMING the golden tyrant because it would mean misery and boredom for thousands of years. He viewed it as a fate worse than death, but a role that was likely necessary for the survival of the human race.

No, Paul definitely feared the golden tyrant coming to pass. He was too worried about oppressing humanity and didn't want the entire species to suffer in order to insure it's survival. That's why Paul's ultimately a failure and his son is the God Emperor the universe needed, not the one it deserved.

I don't have the book anymore since I was borrowing so I can't really write a direct quote. But what bugged me was that anytime Paul was talking with people in the first few chapters, there was just way way way too much internal monologue. And you see every bodies internal monologues at once which gets tedious. But the main problem I had, was that every single thing the characters though was incredibly exaggerated. Paul would say "Oi, that's a fukin box ya gab!" and someone would spend a whole paragraph detailing how their mind was so fucking blown by the fact that this boy was so incredibly intelligent that he had made such an amazing statement.

This of course, would be fine if he actually was making profound statements, or at least making them infrequently. But it was constant. Got really fucking tiring and annoying reading about people falling out of their chairs because someone made a basic observation.

Oh, and there was another chapter where the stereotypical monstrously fat fuck bad guy was describing his evil plan, and that scene had the same problem, which excessive, overly exaggerated internal monologue coming from every character in the room.

I dunno, I didn't dig it for those reasons, but I might have gone into it expecting the wrong thing.

That's not the first fourth of the book, that's the first twenty pages or so. But since I have the book right here, I checked and the first time anyone is surprised by Paul's observations is on page 10, by which time he's already made at least two if not three stupid comments that were ridiculed. He then gets credited with another brilliant observation on page 12, but if you keep reading the series it becomes clear that observation is not entirely accurate. So two instances where Paul makes people think he's a genius, one of which he isn't actually right. And they are pretty sharp observations for him to be making.

You need everyone's internal monologue otherwise you'd have no clue why they were saying what they were saying. I'd rather read people's internal monologues than have unnecessary speech by characters that had no reason to say anything.

If by page 186 you still hate it, you probably won't like it.

Odyssey sort of already exists, Ulysses 31, The Odyssey in space by TMS.

>The 31st century. Ulysses is the Captain of the spaceship Odysseus, directed by the central computer Shyrka. As a a gift for his son's Telemaque's 12th birthday, Ulysses takes him on a space journey for the first time. Telemaque is kidnapped by aliens who need a child sacrifice to their god - a giant cyclope, who is discovered to be a machine, of which the aliens, of course, are not aware. Ulysses saves his son, along with a little girl, Themis, and her older brother. As a punishment for such an intervention, the Great Gods of the mysterious Olympus punish him, freezing all Ulysses's staff, leaving him alone on the ship with Telemaque and Themis. The way back to Earth is erased from Shyrka's memory. Now Ulysses has to find the Kingdom of Hades in order to discover the way home. Ulysses's journey and adventures are parallelled to those of his ancestor, the Ancient Greek Ulysses, though "translated" into the Outer Space. The question of who actually the Olympus Gods are is raised.

I am not trying to be a dick, but you have literally read next to nothing. The scale of the book is absolutely massive, you haven't seen anything yet, it hasn't even started moving at that point. It is a space opera among space operas. You need all the internal monologues because with all of the massive scale and the political intrigue and whatnot.
