Just join a club that participates in the type of shooting you are interested in. My pistol club mostly does accuracy drills with .22's but we participate in other things like night shooting (where the targets are lit by various means like flashlights or blinking floodlights), field shooting (out in the woods with different reactive targets) and contests where we run a kilometer, shoot a group, run a kilometer, shoot a group etc.
I'm also a hunter so sometimes I enter contests at my local long gun range where we shoot skeet and moving animal silhouettes.
I don't know how it is in the US but here most if not all ranges are registered with some kind of national or international sport shooting organization that organizes events and competitions.
