Years ago when i learned how to use shitty particle systems in after effects i'd see tuts for shit like this and think "wow i wanna make something like that". Sure it looks kinda cool, but it isn't anything, and it serves no purpose, and it has been done tens of thousands of times all over youtube.

Motion graphics like anything else comes in ranges from shit to very impressive.
The algorithms used to make this kind of stuff are quite neat and some of the best work are done by people who actually write and develop stuff like that themselves.
The fact that anyone can now follow a simple tutorial to make stock intros like that on their desktop computers is testament to the power of the technology they've developed.
