Hey /3/

Just finished this Judy rig I've been working on over at /co/, and I though I may as well post it here. It is for >Blender, and can be acquired here: mediafire.com/download/5u5h59bmmifuxcx
It is also up on blendswap if you prefer.
There are some things I'll be fixing soon, but I'll wait for feedback to make other changes as needed and then update it.

Anyways, hopefully you guys have some fun with it.
>>
>>517547

Can you do Elsa too ?
>>
>>517548
Well, I don't know, but I'd image there must be a half decent rig already by now...
I couldn't in the short term at least because I've got a backlog of homework from trying to get this done.

Glad you like it! I've been working on it for just under two weeks.

>>517559
Yeah, it looks really weird. From what I can tell that is because the eyes are pointing too far apart from eachother. Otherwise it is workable.

Sorry, massive noob to Blender here. How can I reset the pose to be the same as it looks when I select the Armature in the Outliner?

To reset the pose select all the bones in pose mode and hit alt-g, alt-r, alt-s

>>517566
I tried that, and it doesn't work.
It only changes the pose a little bit.

I noticed however that even when pressing A in the viewport to select all, only some bones were selected. So I sat there and selected them all by hand, pressed Alt-G+R+S, and it still didn't work.
>>
>>517547

Can you upload an fbx. Thanks.
>>
>>517569
That looks quite bizarre, I don't quite know what went wrong there unfortunately without being able to see more. To be honest this is a fairly complex rig, so it will be hard to work with if you don't have much blender experience.

"a" will toggle selection of all the bones in pose mode by the way.

What I think is going on is that you need to change the IK/FK properties and the pivot property. In the readme I explain where those properties are located when the rig script has executed. Make sure it has run by opening the script and pressing alt-p over it.

>>517570
mediafire.com/download/uj4di687b8oey69
Do note that a lot of work is required to get the fbx working, as a lot of not exportable features are used in the blender rig.

2 weekss to make this is very reasonable. There is very little detail on the model so if you know what your'e doing the actual workload isn't going to consume a lot of time.

not much to learn, really, you get a virtual brush that you can use to brush it in 3D, you get to control length, shape, kinks/twirls/etc, amount etc, and you can put any shader on it you like

it's pretty intuitive, I would say, the first time I tried it out (without a tutorial) I pretty much immediately got photorealistic results (just make sure to put a partially translucent, partially anisotropic shader on there -- translucency and anisotropy are the two defining features of the "hair look")

>>
>>517612
it's by disney studio, not pixar. And while this model is really nice, it's clearly not nearly as detailed or finely rigged as the original one. Also, the disney team made many characters, not just one. This one also just has the default blender fur applied to it, probably just based on a default human rig, etc. You can bet everything is custom on the original disney one.

I have no big issues believing he made this one in two weeks.
>>
>>517612
A skilled person could make this over the weekend if they poured every ounce of their time into it. OP probably worked on and off over those two weeks, and you can still tell that he had to be dedicated as fuck to get the level of accuracy he did.
>>
Would take me months to make this as I am so autistic. Can you bake fur to a texture in blender?
>>
>>517612
Actually the body is pretty basic and generic, he might have just took it from somewhere. The face is just as simple as well. And if he just slapped a readymade rig this can easily be done under 2 weeks.

That's incredibly fucking retarded logic.

First off, no decent 3D artist is going to claim works that aren't theirs, especially when applying for a job.

Second, since only a shitty artist would claim works that aren't theirs, it would be blatantly fucking obvious that the work doesn't belong to them.

You're basically saying people shouldn't release source files since others can misuse/claim its theirs.

>>
>>517692
first off, on startup it asks you whether you want to run scripts or not, say yes, it will reload the file.

then go into pose mode, this allows you to move bones around by rotating (r) and grabbing (g).

when in pose mode, you should now on the left side get a panel with extra controls (below the grease pencil) with options to switch between IK/FK, rig head, face, mouth, arms, legs, toes, etc separately

also note the many different layers below in the layer-switcher. Bones are on layer #2 (but just keep all layers visible at all times)

Also make sure you reloaded trusted, otherwise the controls don't work.

< example
>>
>>517689
>mouth, tongue, individual facial muscles, fingers, toes etc are all rigged
i certainly would hope so, these are pretty much the minimum requirement for a character rig.
Again, I don't want to be a cunt since it's great that OP shared his work (and everyone commenting on it looks pleased with it), but seeing the screenshots here i don't believe for a second this compares to a feature film rig. But hey, no biggie, i was merely responding to the dude who thinks it's impossible to rig a charcter in 2 weeks
>>
>>517699

I interpreted the "AAA" as meaning an AAA game production. I would say this is easily up-to-par in terms of quality with many AAA game rigs I've seen. I've not worked in film, so I don't really know what the rigs look like there. I can imagine that some of them are much more complex still and have many more features.

No. Lux and Cycles have completely different node options. And I believe that goes with every other renderer too. I think the Luxrender team are trying to make an option that will completely convert a Cycles material into a Lux material. It works well with simple materials. Although from doing a little work in it already it Luxrender makes material setups a lot easier. With that cloth material I don't have to mess with all those cloth bump maps.

um... you can just disable IK and use FK instead, but we use IK because it's way easier than FK.

IK is like "put your hand here" and then all the other bones follow suit and do whatever is necessary to move the hand there

FK is like "put this angle in the elbow, put this angle in the shoulder, put this angle in the wrist, ..."
>>
>>517792
Both have their merits, in my experience. FK allows for more explicit control without having to fuck with the pole target, for example. IK is usually best for endpoints you don't want to move, like planted feet or hands.

There some number of people are going to try and port it for Maya, chances are it is just a matter of time. I've used Maya a little, but since I used blender first and have been doing so for 6 years, I hardly consciously think about the interface anymore, and I work fastest in it. Use what you know. Besides, I enjoy scripting in Blender much more, as the application and api is brilliantly designed around that. Modifying the interface is super easy if you can handle baby tier python, which I'd know because I hardly know much python myself, and you don't even need the source code to change most of it.

In total, that gives about 520,000 hairs.

>>

Doesn't look as good as the cycle ones, IMO. Fur color etc is also a bit off, but whatever.

Do you have SSS on the ears? The ears look way better in cycles, IMO.

The lux fur on the face also looks really weird, IMO. On the ears it's nice, but on the face it just looks really sparse and sporadic.

Nose and mouth also look like they are missing SSS

fur on the feet also looks a bit weird, not as rabbit-like as the cycles one.
>>
>>517857
>Doesn't look as good as the cycle ones, IMO. Fur color etc is also a bit off, but whatever.
Cycles has a more dedicated hair shader and also has more tuning options. Whereas For Lux I had to just mix a glossy and transparent shader together. The color might be because OP might have tweaked the color values a bit on the texture. I didn't.

>Do you have SSS on the ears? The ears look way better in cycles, IMO.
No. SSS in Luxrender is a bit more complicated. In Cycles there is a dedicated SSS shader but in Lux you have to use volumes and mess with scattering scales, scattering colors, absorptions and absorption values.

>The lux fur on the face also looks really weird, IMO. On the ears it's nice, but on the face it just looks really sparse and sporadic.
Not sure what you mean by this.

>Nose and mouth also look like they are missing SSS
See reason for SSS above.

>fur on the feet also looks a bit weird, not as rabbit-like as the cycles one.
Maybe I still need to mess with the material some more.
>>
>>517859

If you look at e.g.
>>517853
or
>>517817
, the hair on the face looks pretty fluffy, loose and regular. In the luxrender one it looks more like it's only a couple white hairs on a really gray skin. Especially if you look at the bottom of the head, where it almost looks like there's no hair at all except for some sporadic white hairs that are sticking out.

Makes it look kinda ugly, IMO. The cycles one has a more luxurious, even, soft look to it, I think.

Except for the top of the ears, where the lux one looks really fluffy.
>>
>>517860
I see what you mean. And it could be my material, or it could be the angle it is at and the light brightness. Maybe there would be more detail if I cranked up the lights a bit. I'm trying to fix my material right now.

after playing around with it for a bit (I'm not an experienced animator or anything), some feedback:

- I think the mouth could be a bit more flexible

I played around with it a little, it's a really nice rig setup, probably the best I've used out of all the ones I've messed around with that are available on Blendswap.

I did notice though that the head fur can easily clip through the chest piece. Had to comb it for this image for example. Sucks that Blender is still so shitty with particle hair systems that it doesn't have any means of temporary hair edits for animating, as far as I know. Probably wouldn't be easy working with this for animations.
>>
>>517898
There's probably a solution for that, since e.g. cosmos laundromat and other blender-made videos feature a huge amount of fur.

I don't know how to do it, but I bet you can keyframe the hair settings/combing/length.
>>
Is there a way for this rig to work with maya?
>>
>>517910
You could try exporting to collada, no idea if it'll work. collada does at least support bones and such, but you'll probably end up having to do the materials, hairs etc, at least.

Basically the correct/endorsed way to achieve stuff not clipping through eachother is to enable physics, which will take care of it.

If you really do want to manually control it though, enable AnimAll and then you can weight-paint things such as Density, Length, Clump, Kink and Roughness separately for each keyframe (see my shitty 5-minute render)

not bad, but could use some more determination and flow between movements (looks a little robotic as is).

not sure if it helps, but i'd look into traditional animation techniques (e.g. squash/stretch and exaggeration) since disney seem to incorporate those quite successfully in their 3d animation as well.

Ahh, I see. I'll agree that original work is more interesting, and I typically enjoy it more. This project was mainly to learn more about getting hair/fur to work, as I haven't done any projects with that before. I copied the model because that is one of the best ways to learn, study from the masters.

That aside, >you'll care or believe me, I'm no furry. Just enjoyed the movie, and as above this was a learning project. Now, I'll preempt the obvious response, that I'm being a furry enabler by simply saying that's not my problem.

>>518064
4.1GB is more that I can upload reasonable. Besides, there is little point.

>>518065
Yeah, I'm backlogged with a bunch of homework, but after I'll work some more on it. I mostly need to exaggerate a lot of the motion, add more movement to the face, and "sharpen" the motions. I didn't have time to do that before rendering however. I'll look into how squashing/stretching looks too, thanks for the tip.
>>
>>518073
>Besides, there is little point.

>I copied the model because that is one of the best ways to learn, study from the masters.

Literally the same post, friend.
>>
>>518073
>This project was mainly to learn more about getting hair/fur to work,
If you want to learn how this works you have to read and understand the source code and papers behind it. You have a shallow understanding now at best, and you're results arent good, barely above Nvidia HairFX level. You wasted a lot of time and you have a bad attitude, like you know everything. This is one of the reasons why you get hate
>>
>>518077
HAHAHAHAHAHA oh wow this guy

I've been on the internet for a good 20 years now, but this must be in the top 10 of the most retarded things I've ever read
>>
>>518077
> you have to read and understand the source code and papers

Reading source is not how you become a good artist. Reading source does almost never further your understanding of how to apply something artistically.

Secondly, there isn't much to how fur works. I have read the source of particlesystems before, written some myself. At the basic level, it is just "take a tube/cone/fan and extrude it along this [bspline/bezier-curve/other subdivision curve]. No point in reading papers about something so simple.

Now, modern renderers are a bit more advanced than that, they let you do things such as have forces act on the particles (to get clumping, twisting, kinking, ...) and can do physics with them. But there's nothing fundamentally interesting/new, it's all basic geometry, numerical interpolation.

> shallow understanding now at best

He certainly has a better understanding now from an artistical perspective than you will likely ever have.

> you're results arent good

The only thing here that isn't good is your grammar. That aside (and that everyone in this thread -- and elsewhere -- agrees that cycles fur rendering looks great), feel free to show us something you made that's better! j/k, of course you can't, because you've never done anything of worth whatsoever.

> Nvidia HairFX level

Ah, I see you've never seen nvidia hairfx. Granted, in recent years game-hair has become acceptable, but it's still worlds away from OPs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKpPiXRnPkg look at this or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md4Hmgtl8q0 this. This doesn't look nearly as good as what the OP got, even though the camera stays a mile away from the hair at all times to avoid showing you the ugly.

> you have a bad attitude

only one here with a bad attitude is you; OP is a pretty humble guy. He even posted his rig for us to play around with and critique, and it's the most quality post /3/ has seen in months.

>>
>>518259
I know it is retarded to do so but I'm saying legally he can do that.

Nope.
Moral rights aren't waivable in the civilized world.

And CC0 is a special kind of public domain. OP can't release his work in the public domain, he doesn't hold the rights to it, Disney does. Judy Hopps is a copyrighted character.
He may choose to distribute his file freely, but Disney can take it down whenever they want, just like any other piece of fanart.

Not just that, even if it was a completely original piece, some jurisdictions prohibit you from voluntarily surrendering your copyrights.

Public domain means the copyrights have expired, or they never existed in the first place due to some special law.
CC0 means the author wishes for his work to be public domain, but a court of law may not recognize it as such.
