You know what would improve these Poser/DS threads immensely? If someone were to post links to guides that would help people learn the software, or learn content creation for the software. Most people that gripe about Poser and DAZ Studio do it because people just pose naked chicks and render them, without knowing anything about the software really. A collection of good guides/tutorials would go a long way toward fixing that problem, at least here.

For instance, links to information about how to make your own morph targets / full-body morphs, focusing on the Poser/DS side of it. How do you export the geometry, and reimport it to use as a morph? Stuff like that would be well-recieved, I think.

Also some tutorials for animating in either of the programs would be great, or anything more in-depth, so that people can be more than just consumers of the content with them.

Basically, make this thread like the General threads on other boards. Call it Poser/DAZ Studio General or something. A /pdsg/ would also serve as a decent containment thread. People that get all booty bothered about others using the programs wouldn't have to see it anymore, and people that want to discuss it would have a place to do so.

Texture packs, morphs, add-ons. Assume most clothing's default textures are mediocre to good and that you could do better.

any Daz3d oldfag in here?

is it just my PC or did anything after version 3.x took a big SHIT in terms of 3d-transformation performance?

when I play the same (preview) animation in both versions, the preview runs at like 30 fps in version 3.1 and at like 10fps in 4.x.

orbiting around in complex scenes may be faster in 4.x but anything that involves manipulating like moving bones, animations etc is WAY WAY SLOWER than in the old version.

I can't find anything about this anywhere, so I hope there are some people here who experience something similar.

daz3d is one of those softwares that would definitely benefit from going open source.
it's fucking HILARIOUS how fucking incompetent they are.
even the search function of their forums is GONE after they felt the need for a forum facelift.

Bribing i13 and Stonemason to make DS-only content isn't enough to convince me to switch and Iray isn't either.

Here's one of my favorite Poser images from way back. It's "Defeated" by ToxicAngel, from 2002. Obviously CG, and highly postworked, but it's almost 15 years old. It's very good for the time, in my opinion.

15 years ago faggot, the thing was probably generated in Bryce

>>
>>509842
>>509861

It actually WAS generated in Bryce. I think the tree behind her was made in Carrara with the vegetation presets, which is why the limbs are obviously cylinders joined at stiff angles.

ToxicAngel made this with DAZ assets, in a combination of Poser 4 and Photoshop (6 or 7, ffs), 15 years ago. Considering how far we've come since then, it's stunning that this was produced with that essentially stone age tech.
>>
Daz seems to be going to some sort of encrypted cloud storage for its content in an attempt to quash piracy but apparently this means their products will no longer work with Poser or Carrera so it's already pissed off a lot of their customers.
>>
>>509748

McCasual's scripts are amazing. If Daz had half a brain they'd hire him to improve their software since he seems to know more than the actual staff programmers.
>>
>>509667

If I remember correctly pre version 4 the viewport did not display subdivided meshes. 4 and up display subdivisions in the preview, default 1 subD level. That increases the polygon load on the rendering engine. You can have it not display the subdivisions in the preview but that's not the default.

Only products sold through Daz will have the DRM on them. Rederosity and Hivewire and all other 3rd party products will not have DRM encryption on them.

Daz makes it's money primarily by selling content (which is why Daz Studio is free). They've not made it so that the content they sell is less useful than the content their competitors sell. On top of it, the pirates will probably have their DRM cracked before 4.9 even officially releases so it's not really going to do anything to stop piracy.

Daz has just shot themselves in the foot and they're too stupid to even realize it. For every dollar they're stopping in piracy it's going to end up costing them ten in sales.

Idiots.
>>
>>510427
>Daz has just shot themselves in the foot and they're too stupid to even realize it.

DAZ3d, the Gestapo of 3d accessible content and their shitty Studio app no one wants to use. Both Poser, and DAZ3d both became better because users cracked them to be useful, and years later they still haven't accepted that other people - their user base made their software useful.

Imagine if a drug dealer called the cops on you every time you bought product from him. Eventually you'd realize it is better to go else where, or find ways to circumvent around the dealer whose intention is to fuck you over every time.

Daz has given Renderosity and HiveWire a huge birthday present. Even if there were no problems at all with the DRM content from Daz the customer base perceives a problem with it and this is going to have a serious negative effect on their vendor sales which is the only thing they really make money on.

They've seriously underestimated the negative reaction putting DRM on their Connect feature would have on their customers.

They're used to pissing people off by releasing new figures when what their customers want are new features. They know their customers will grumble about having to go buy the same set of morphs for a new figure they've already purchased for 3 other figures, but they'll still rebuy the same stuff over and over again.

This time it looks like the customers are putting their feet down and saying "No, I will not rebuy all my stuff again for the newest Genesis figure I never asked for if it's going to be restricted with DRM".

It'll be interesting to see if Daz will double down on the DRM or admit they made a mistake.

because DS is tied directly to their online store the only way they can gift it to people is by crediting them the dollar amount on the item and then "purchasing" it for them

this is the level of technical skill behind DAZ

it caused a minor shitstorm on the forums, the mods tried damage control and then the item was uploaded to kickass the next day and now searching 'bijou for G2F' brings up the catalog page in google as the first hit

>How's she messed up?

If you really do not know you are part of the problem. Learn proper rigging sizes.
Also if you need help knowing what people want take time to examine v7 to get a hint. Poser's 3d sculptor Teyon is an amateur who clearly doesn't know the intricate specifics the female form. He is most likely a closeted homosexual.
>>
>>510725
If people using Poser/DAZ whatever can tell what's wrong with the models and call their authors closet homosexuals etc for doing it wrong, why don't they build their own mannequins?
>>
>>510690

$350 for a fucking MORPH AND TEXTURE?!?

Fuck you DAZ. Fuck you.
>>
>>510726

The 'closet homosexual' thing is a meme that started back when another guy was sculpting Victoria for DAZ. He always gave her a mannish face, and now that he's at Hivewire, the trend has continued with Dawn.

The poster you replied to either doesn't know that or was just spinning it a little differently and claiming this other artist is a fag because 'lol straight guys instinctively know everything about the female form'.

That said, the Pauline model is fucked in a few different ways. Her jaw is far too wide, her face is too small for her head, her elbows are rigged very, very badly (yes her elbows - how they fucked up an elbow I will never know), and the bottoms of her feet look like someone has taken a wood planer to her heels.

All that aid, vendors can mod her however they like and sell the modified figure, cr2, textures, whatever. That doesn't make up for releasing a busted-ass hoopty of a model in the first place.

Oh, the old artist that made Vicky 1-3 look like a dude, and that gave Dawn the jaw like a fucking humvee is Christopher Creek. Look at his artwork and judge for yourself (but really, after seeing his poser figure work, I certainly have my own ideas about him).
>>
Oh, one other thing about this genius move that DAZ made with the encryption. It breaks compatibility with Carrara, which DAZ also sells. They market it as a full 3d suite, and all of its updates for like 4 years have been done to make it compatible with the Genesis figures in the first place.

I'm sure that there will be a paid addon for it that corrects the issue, though. Fucking cunts.

>no front knee shaping
>no leg hamstring sculpting
>no inner thigh sartorius shape
>no rib cage
>no rectus abdominis
>no abdominal shape what so ever
>no shoulder blades
>no calves

Granted as >>510742 mentioned this can all be made, but with so much missing, and so much misshapen to start off getting to a point of reshaping is the same as demolishing a house so as to rebuild it from scratch. Might as well start over with better rigging, and basic form.

On top of this, v7 already has everything listed above, and more. Poser's sculptor is either incompetent, or lazy. The argument could be made that they left it all plain to allow users to add their own, but again why bother if the wire-frame isn't made to accommodate such modifications in the first place?
So all I can conclude is they don't care, or lack the skill set to replicate accurate female definition. Or, they're closeted gays.

Anybody serious about zbrush knows studying anatomy is vital in sculpting, and still Poser's group hasn't caught up with what is now the basics.

>when another guy was sculpting Victoria for DAZ. He always gave her a mannish face

Until Victoria 4 who was most likely sculpted by mallenlane (at least, from the neck up) because Mike was already pro in Modo when V4 was developed. My guess is that Chris made the old college try, shat the bed as usual and Dan begged Mike to take over anonymously.

Dan will still tell you with a straight face that Chris made V4 but Dawn puts the lie to that right off.

> Jaw too wide
Easily fixed
> face too small
Morph that controls eye and mouth repositioning, or just morph the rest of the head down and rescale the head up

The overall proportions of the face are passable enough and the mesh is a good foundation for creating new characters. We've had to suffer through far worse with other head meshes.

Chris is a trained medical illustrator which means he has no business making errors in a sculpt. I would almost guarantee that despite his training, he spends zero (0) time doing any kind of life modeling to sharpen his skills as an artist. The guy who modeled Joel and Ellie was clear that you have to keep up with your analog skills if you expect to be top notch as a digital sculptor.

Elbows can be given magnet zones and flat feet can be morphed.

> still, this shouldn't have passed beta

No arguments from me. But again, compared with past mishaps from both DAZ and SM when it comes to releasing figures before they're ready, this is nitpicking unless you've got more serious problems to report.

The next time SM needs a new figure they would be better off having known 3D modelers bid on it and stop with the amateur hour bullshit. Sixus was responsible for Don & Judy as I recall and christ they're awful to look at.

polite reminder that Renderosity is only 1 year older than Daz (counting when it was still Zygote)

Daz's chief revenue source is the production and sales of digital assets
Has its own full time art staff

Total number of Daz products released between 2000-present: 24700
Total number of Renderosity products released between 1999-present: 113000

And Renderosity routinely discontinues poor selling items because they can literally afford to do so, even though they still have all the data on their cloud storage. At any given time they probably have 2x as many 'live' items for sale than Daz does.

Correct, with one addendum: characters that specifically say they are for Victoria are morphs that you have to apply after applying the Victoria morph or using the Victoria preset.

Is there any way to use pirated content with 4.9 or will I have to revert to 4.8?
>>
>>511101

If it's pirated it will have the DRM encryption busted. 4.9 runs unencrypted content just fine.

Daz maintains that their encryption cannot be cracked, period. They say the people claiming to have cracked their DRM are lying and simply distributing the non DRM versions of the product since the only DRM products they have released to date also have non-DRM versions too.

You forgot the "unless you know what you are doing" part.

I forget what it was called just now, you had to uninstall DAZ Studio, reboot your pc, manually disable the process in task manager (which start up with the system, surprise surprise), and then manually delete the DAZ Studio registry keys. It was a complete pain in the dick. All of that just because I wanted to do a fresh install of DAZ Studio and my content.

I never reinstalled on my actual machine after that, because fuck that kind of horseshit. I also never tried to just remove the process from startup with msconfig, but that would likely work instead of rebooting then disabling it by hand.

I still use DAZ Studio from time to time, but I keep that shit quarantined on a virtual machine now.

This is a whole new level of FUCK YOU, BALTIMORE
>>
>>512419
>I remember they switched database setups at one point, and fucked over smart content for months.
That was when they switched to PG from an older, shittier db platform whose maintainers abandoned it.

PG is designed to be enterprise-level relational database management for server applications, and it buries itself balls-deep in your OS to remain robust. In fact, it creates a silent user named postgresql in Windows whose password doesn't expire which runs it in the background at startup.

If you're asking why they didn't just use MySQL instead, it's simple: MySQL requires commercial licensing for embedding in commercial, non-FOSS software, but PostGres' license is militantly free no matter what you do with it. There are shovelware poker games which use it as their db engine for this reason.

There's no crime in avoiding reinventing the wheel but PG is a more resource intensive piece of software than most of the desktop applications that choose to rely on it. I will say that if you had a runtime that was half a terabyte and you needed to quickly find all the sci-fi themed assets, a robust database engine is a smart idea.

But realistically if you're at that point, you might be better off having an indexing system not beholden to a specific posing/rendering application.
>>
>>512436

PostgreSQL doesn't work depending on what firewall or antivirus software you have. If you use ZoneAlarm you're screwed. DS 4.9 won't work unless you have of PostgreSQL connection so depending on your antivirus/firewall you can't run 4.9 at all because it won't work with the Valentina db.
>>
>>512456
That's because it wasn't meant to coexist with firewall/AV software you download from Cnet. It's intended to be installed on a hardened Windows/Linux server where the built in firewalls/AV are robust enough to do the job, or you're a sysadmin who knows what they're doing in configuring the platform.

MySQL/MariaDB are better choices for a desktop footprint.

Having a V7 in Poser that works just as V7 should work in DAZ, that is the missing link for Poser vendor sell.

Your memory isn't measured in gigabytes, is it. It's not the poly count that makes V4/M4 more resource intensive, it's the sheer amount of JCMs embedded in it because Poser didn't have weight mapping when V4 released.

>>513859
>I'm quite amazed at just how much content there is out there for them.

No one's heartless enough to delete ancient websites.

Generation 3 was out for something like 3-4 years. Generation 4's about to turn 10 at the end of 2016 and people are STILL making content for it.

> I've been having a hell of a time finding any of those figures on torrent sites.
Pic related; welcome to newfag nation where few people care about anything more than one generation behind current.

M3, V3, SP, David, MilKids, SheFreakV3, etc. are all still Platinum Club items, and the basic figures are only $9.95 each before PC discounts apply. Waste less time and buy them.

>Your memory isn't measured in gigabytes, is it. It's not the poly count that makes V4/M4 more resource intensive, it's the sheer amount of JCMs embedded in it because Poser didn't have weight mapping when V4 released.

I knew everything you just said. The issue is that Generation 4 has more maps per figure. When you need a different set of maps per character, the additional maps start both eating up ram. That's not an issue if you only have a dozen or so figures in your scene, but when you start to do crowd scenes, like a couple of superheroes battling it out with people around, like they are in the middle of a mall, shit can get dicey.

Remember, not everyone doe still images with Poser. For those of us that do animations too, the lighter the figures are, the better the entire experience is.

3: Face, head/body and limbs. Background characters don't need bump/specular/displacement maps and you can reuse one set with tints added in the shader nodes of whatever rendering system you're using. Shrek reused the same basic male and female for most of the human characters for this reason, only morphing them to look different.

Before DAZ acquired Girl from Kim Goossens, Neftis modeled her own character NeftOoN Gal, and the male version was Neftoon Pal (don't ask about the capitalization). Pal was what Guy7 should have been: a deliberate proportional caricature instead of an uncanny smoothing of some wop.

I would've hired either Goossens or Neftis to model Guy7.

The marching orders at Daz are "fuck stylized characters" and just like how Aiko stopped being anime, Girl went from being a toon to being a pseudo-Bratz morph. Putting realistic hair on her and making her proportions human was the nail in the coffin.

Base Victoria 7 for G3F is free with march madness purchase today.
>>

Anyone who plans on buying anything already has V7. Therefore doesn't need V7. Why don't they offer V7 free first, THEN welcome new shoppers to buying stuff for their new free V7 base?

Must anon do all of the common sense thinking for them?
>>
>>515135
I actually bought Arabella first :D
>>

On the base model or if you've got the patience on the titty model and reverse it out from the base model.

What are some decent communities for daz/poser?
I'd like to see people's creations with credit and references to items used.
Daz forums are a bloody mess.
>>
>>515435
Renderosity is probably your best bet. They are pretty anal about crediting in their gallery posts.

I love Fratast's snarky girls, especially the idiot who spends too much time under the tanning lamp. Most of his textures are better than the original products'.

Going through all these templates and reviewing other people's items. Why is every fucking thing saved as jpg?
>>
>>515762
Because virtually no vendor has heard of pngcrush and as soon as they saw the filesize of whatever UV export they created they decided JPEG was better.

Why do people make this trash? They are fucking hideous and about a decade out of date.
>>
>>515772
People invested a lot in that series and seem to have stubbornly stuck ti it. My guess at least.

Amazingly Tempesta3D hasn't made a monstrosity out of Star yet, and the figure's been out for a year now. It might be because it's not possible to make her pig-eyed and stretch her nose down into the mouth then add giant fucking cheekbones.

Well, it's possible, but it's also work.
>>
>>515826
Holy fuck is this the almighty brianna wu? she is a fucking gremlin. Those characters are autistic as fuck. Why didn't she hire some real artists with all that kickstarter cash?

You're asking a question with a long, drawn-out answer but in short, Brian is fond of soaking people for money in return for next to nothing creatively instead of farming it out.
>>
Here's some more free content for Star, mostly poses but also a toon shader

They're really pushing STAR in their sale today.

Not sure what I would prefer instead though I guess.

IRay is fucking champ.
What other rendering options are there?
I've used 3Delight but its pretty featureless and takes forever.

I have a question:
Why don't you guys use a proper modelling suite like Maya or
Blender
?

Daz and Poser looks and seems like garbage, couldn't you use the content made for the two on other software?
