What kind of man was your Grandfather?
What was his religion?
Do you know of any clubs or legions or lodges he was a member of?
Did he talk about any group he was a part of, or do you know if he went somewhere on a habitual basis, weekly or monthly and didn't say what it was or gave a nonchalant reason like fishing or billiards or something?
Is Grandmother still alive?

>>
>>17704075
>>17704084
Okay at the risk of laying some actual occult-type wisdom on /x/ I'll explain.

This particular cipher is essentially using a 3x3 grid to represent SOMETHING which we will assume are letters that spell out English words.

Step one is to make a list of all the different arrangements of the 3x3 grid that appear in the book

Step two is to assign a letter to each one of these, presuming there are 26 or less. If there's more than 26 or MAYBE 30 including punctuation marks then it's already something more than just an english language cipher

Step three is to take advantage of good old modern technology and plug the entire ciphered text into a piece of deciphering software and let it solve it for you.

One additional assumption I would probably make when inputting the ciphered text is that line breaks don't indicate anything and should just be run together and it's only the actual spaces that should be put in as spaces. Lines appear to be 5 characters long btw, other than the title page which I would omit from the software since its spacing is less clear and there's plenty of text in the rest of the book for the program to use to work on. Once the cipher is solved you can manually decipher the title page anyway since you'll know what letter represents what 3x3 grid character.
>>

Quiet and stoic, mainly. Didn't talk much.

Not sure about his religion. My mom (his daughter) raised me Lutheran but from what I understand that mainly came from her mother.

None that I know of. A lot of people around town who knew him really well are Freemasons though.

Mainly just sat around the house after retirement from what I know. I didn't keep up with his routine.

No, she died a few years ago.

Also I would think it's obvious that only the right-hand pages contain the words and the left-hand "even numbered" pages are just a mirror of the right-hand "odd-numbered" pages but I thought I should still mention it.

Yes the fact that they chose to use 3x3 instead of 2x2 as well as the fact that Hebrew guy did bring to my attention that there are instances of two consecutive spaces might be indicators of additional levels of complexity but OP will just have to cross that bridge if and when he comes to it.
>>
>>17704169
Jeez let's hope not. We'll need to presume at this point that their unevenness is due to some having been lost over time or by the person who bound it not being as meticulous as the person who wove the pages.

32 is getting pretty high but it's still possible. For example new sentences might be indicated by the use of a capital letter or there might just be a wide variety of punctuation. It's not necessarily a deal breaker.

Well when analyzing the information it's best to keep it as simple as possible to start and only to add complexity if it becomes necessary. Occam's razor, you know. Perhaps it's one of many and it would have been a waste of the labor of the expert who made the pages to bind them. Do you think the monks who illuminated those ancient manuscripts were the same ones who bound them?

It was definitely hand made there's no machine that could do that. Machine made chain mail looks different and I'm pretty sure that the machines form the links out of a big spool of wire so there'd be no way to even randomly insert brass links much less in evenly spaced lines and columns

You mean producing chain-mail? A technology that has existed for centuries and is now easier to produce than ever?

Not to mention the fact that the people attempting to "decipher" this thing have failed to point out that the gold "characters" will suddenly take new shapes if you brush the page with your fingers or settle the book a different way.

OP here. The pages are very stiff, like the rings are basically as small as they can get while still fitting together. You can't really change the shape of the characters but pushing them around.

Though if he posts his ciphered text then some other Anons could take a crack at it.

This one is focused on single words and provides a list of English words with a matching pattern from which you could then reverse-decode the cipher. The longer the word the shorter the list of matching words (but the greater the chance you've made a transcoding error)

Too little information on every page.
Being realistic here, it's probably just a 'project' your grandfather wanted to do, with some random (and probably simple) encoded message. Either that or he found it somewhere or bought it and wanted to keep it.

Have we undoubtedly decided what language it is? Some were saying its hebrew but maybe its a language similar to hebrew like Aramaic

No, I think we are just gonna have to trial and error our way through this.

We are currently working under the assumption that it is English. If that categorically fails we would move on to other languages one by one from most to least likely and I'm sorry to tell you that Aramaic would be pretty far down that list.

That's not it although it's definite progress. If you are absolutely sure that you transcoded that right NOW anons can use their numbers to assist by finding various and sundry deciphering tools and plugging in all or part of that. Some people might also go back and check your work by comparing the pattern of the characters and spaces to those in the posted photos.

How many repeat? Which characters repeat the most often?
>>
It is problaby nothing because the first page is clearly arranged to have a title wich consists of two worlds and a signature by the way the golden chains are arrenged, those would be pointless for such a short message

IF it is real it could be based on the bible sinse the ciphers from the second world of the title repeat
BiBle, so I assume those are B's and the very first cipher is a crude H
the ciphers are enough to be versicles numbers

I'm inclined to agree. As I said before I think that thing was made in the 20th century to evoke an antique aesthetic, Mason style but I'm sure there are plenty of anons who know more about chain mail than I do.

Also interesting to note is that by some accounting there are 38 different unique phonetic sounds in the English language. If each character represented one of these kana style the message could be a lot longer but also much harder to decode.
>>
TOASTING IN AN EPIC BREAD
>>
>>17704813
Just finished page 3, think I anons from above were wrong, they're not 3x3 grids, it's like 3-2-3. The first and last rows are always rings pointing right, second row are rings pointing left.

Also, there's one extra "page", there are too many letters and "Rhinoceros beetle", whether it were true, should have been repeated all the same in 4 pages, which is not.
>>
>>17704831
Hm that's interesting you're correct that there is no character that has three across the center. Another thing that may be worth noting is that in cases where there's an entire blank column the only way to be absolutely sure that for example
110
100
010
is different from
011
010
001
It's to count the number of links separating a grid or to be especially mindful of exactly how these narrower characters line up with full width characters on other lines.

Hopefully the person who created the cipher avoided using two of these narrower column shifted patterns to represent two different characters.
>>
>>17704844
Exactly! I was worried that I was too high for my own good...

Your thoughts on links separating characters is what I initially thought too, but I think somewhere on the second page that logic didn't hold up... I'm not sure if I fucked up / the creator fucked up the spacing / it has no "semantic" meaning.
>>
>>17704853
If there's truly no logic to the link spacing he probably just eyeballed that element and it is indeed meaningless. To keep your brain from overheating on this pass it may be best to assume that any column shifting if it even exists is accidental and that the shape of the characters is what matters. This may actually have been the intentional implication of having the middle row be only 2 wide to be a "waistline" that never sticks out beyond any corner. This would also make it easier to actually sight-read if a person was well versed in the cipher.
>>
(not to mention make it easier for you to transcode)

Maybe I'm a bad Israeli kike whose first language is Hebrew, but I can't make out much of it.
I think it only seems Hebrew because of the fact that it's written in curved chains, which makes some letters look slightly similar to letters like "א" or "נ" or even "ש".
I'll try again and tell you if I found anything.

When you're into art, drugs, and/or are just naturally a bit bonkers.. then making useless but neat things like this are not uncommon.. I should know, I've made and still do make useless art shit.
>>
>>17704889
Did some Excel Math: Original text is 113 characters. There's 39 unique characters, so more than the English alphabet...
>>
>>17704888
Unfortunately most deciphering software wouldn't be able to break the code if the letters were reversed since they don't spell words. Our brains are able to see things backwards without trying but a computer has to be taught. If anyone is especially suspicious that is the case though they can just reverse the transcoded cipher and put that into the deciphering software. Likewise if someone sees something different than others in the spacing or line order or reading direction. This is where the more people who are messing with it the better. If someone does correctly solve it, it'll become clear to everyone - or everyone who's not a troll and/or a total ignoramus.
>>
it doesnt say anything . the language is from a old rpg and you never get a translation. its like sim talk in the first couple of sims games its just there so things dont seem to empty

I honestly think it's that guy, it's clear to me after going through them all that they're not 3x3 grids, they're 3-2-3 patterns.

I marked what I thought were spaces in my pastebin link, but I'm not sure I got them all. I can definitely say the last two pages were pretty dense, there wasn't a lot of spaces so I'm not sure if they have meaning.

Line breaks I did mark, but I'm not counting them as punctuation.
>>
>>17704907

It came from the merchant quarter of Jangling Hiter, City of Chains, where the Kytons sell goods made from the finest chain to be found anywhere in the multiverse. Even if you could translate it, it would undoubtedly be in the Kyton language and would detail some method of torture using chains, for which the Kytons are both revered and despised. I don't know how your grandfather acquired it; perhaps he visited Jangling Hiter once, as I have. When I close my eyes, I can still hear the clinking and ringing of iron and steel in that infernal place. I can still see the shadowy figures, swathed in softly clittering links, who lurk in dark alleys and doorways where silver traces and rolos hang like cobwebs.

I hope for your sake, your grandfather acquired the book legally--otherwise you can expect a visit from an irate Kyton, coming to reacquire what's his. The last thing you'll see is his impossibly motile chains wrapping around your throat.
