There's a subplot involving Kyouhei (the butt monkey) falling in love with Sanae (Nagisa's mother), who's pretending to be his girlfriend in order to inspire him to be more responsible, and alleviate the pressure on Mei to take care of him.
At the end he goes to Akio to cofess his love for his daughter, only to find out that she's his wife.
And for what it's worth I don't blame him. I'd be interested in her, or really a lot of the mothers since MILF is more the standard than the exception in anime.
