Bakabt (open) and animebytes (private) for anime.

I'd also like to request a good place to download movies, with reasonable seeding on older or foreign films too. TPB is hit and miss for quality a lot of the time, is there anything movie specific?

Bakabt is pretty shit compared to Nyaa. The "one torrent per series" rule really fucks over shows when it has a horriblesub batch for a show instead of the BD release.

For older shows, there's no site better.

Also plenty of shows have multiple options for download. Don't know where you saw that.
