Never played a dating sim before besides Huniepop (which is basically more like bejeweled or some other shitty fb puzzle game) so what are the best?

Preferably one where its not just sex right off the bat and you actually get to know/connect with the characters.

Try Amagami. It's a ps2 title so you'll need an emulator, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly translated.
