im a big anime newbie. i've seen akira, bebop, the first ghost in the shell and bits and pieces of black lagoon. i really want to get into ghost in the shell. it seems huge. where do i start? can someone logically break down the series?
also what other cyberpunk anime should i watch?
The different continuities are:
>the manga
>the first movie then a second called Innocence
>SAC series, 2 seasons then a movie called Solid State Society
>Arise (OVAs and TV series are the same but I think the TV series has added content)
And you can go through them in any order but this is the production order which is most advisable.
Bubblegum Crisis is the top pick for cyberpunk recommendations. Then there's Cyber City Oedo 808, Psycho-Pass (1st season then movie), Mardock Scramble, MADOX-01
If you liked the movie I'd highly suggest Patlabor, one of the best real robot mecha with the same director.

watch the first movie because its da bess.
See both season of SAC. It may seem huge, but you'll be surprised how quickly they pass by. anything after that is up to you. Some people hate the 2nd movie, but i liked it.

seconding marduk scramble. Great animation. Story is whatever, but its decent enough to get you through it.
Try armitage III, but dont go past the first movie. dual matrix sucked
as anon also said, bubblegum crisis is good, but its old, so try it and see if you like it.
finally for cyperpunk you could see the appleseed movies. they're ok, but they rely pretty heavily and shit cgi

First movie, then the Stand Alone Complex series. Both seasons. Second movie if you loved the first, it's also preddy gud.
If you don't like the first movie then don't let that put you off SAC, it's pretty different. I like SAC a lot more, personally.
Haven't seen Arise.
You'd probably like Psycho-Pass.
