I want to upgrade to either a GTX 970 or R9 390, but I wanna know if high-end AMD cards really are as hot as people say they are?

I own a MSI 390. The only times it got really hot was during summer when it was 100ºF or 37ºC outside. It would peak up to 80-90ºC on high load. I'm pretty sure these things were built to overcome high heat. It survived the summer and I'm having no overheating problems as of now. I don't know anything about the gtx 970 but you should go with that if you prefer cooler cards over performance.

R9 390 user here. Never gets above 70c under full load. I have the powercolor pcs+. Just don't get stock and you will be fine.
