Well, I was directed here from the /g/ sticky. I didn't even know this board existed, but if it is anything like /r/, it will be absolutely no help :) but here goes nothing:
I have a very unusual problem that I can not find an answer for. Last night, I noticed that the battery icon on the laptop that I'm using was showing that it was plugged in when it wasn't. It also said that the battery was at 100% charge, which was impossible as I had been using it for about 15 minutes, and it uses about 1% per minute. So, I decided to restart the laptop to see if that would correct the problem.
When I restarted it, the orange Compaq screen with the big "C" or "Q" or whatever came up and never went away. Normally, this screen only shows up for a few seconds before Windows starts running. So I did a hard shutdown and tried again, and same thing. I plugged the AC adapter in and tried again, and same thing. I did this a few more times, letting it stay off for 10 secs, then 30, then 60; still the problem persisted. So then I completely removed the battery and it started up fine. So now, the machine will not turn on past that screen without the battery first being removed. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
I also have a problem where I can not get a wifi signal in the back bedroom which is furthest from the modem unless I unplug the AC and run the laptop off of the battery. I don't know if this is related. The laptop I think is from 2009, it's a Compaq and it runs Windows 7. Everything is original, hardware and software.
TL;DR, laptop won't start past the Compaq screen unless I remove the battery. Thanks in advance from a tech-challenged oldfag.
