Well, I was directed here from the /g/ sticky. I didn't even know this board existed, but if it is anything like /r/, it will be absolutely no help :) but here goes nothing:

I have a very unusual problem that I can not find an answer for. Last night, I noticed that the battery icon on the laptop that I'm using was showing that it was plugged in when it wasn't. It also said that the battery was at 100% charge, which was impossible as I had been using it for about 15 minutes, and it uses about 1% per minute. So, I decided to restart the laptop to see if that would correct the problem.

When I restarted it, the orange Compaq screen with the big "C" or "Q" or whatever came up and never went away. Normally, this screen only shows up for a few seconds before Windows starts running. So I did a hard shutdown and tried again, and same thing. I plugged the AC adapter in and tried again, and same thing. I did this a few more times, letting it stay off for 10 secs, then 30, then 60; still the problem persisted. So then I completely removed the battery and it started up fine. So now, the machine will not turn on past that screen without the battery first being removed. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

I also have a problem where I can not get a wifi signal in the back bedroom which is furthest from the modem unless I unplug the AC and run the laptop off of the battery. I don't know if this is related. The laptop I think is from 2009, it's a Compaq and it runs Windows 7. Everything is original, hardware and software.

TL;DR, laptop won't start past the Compaq screen unless I remove the battery. Thanks in advance from a tech-challenged oldfag.

You killed your battery by leaving it plugged in all the time and using it at the same time.

That second problem is probably a power issue where the antenna doesn't transmit as much to save energy or some shit.
>>
Sounds like your battery is dead. Less likely but also possible is a problem with your motherboard.

I am running my laptop off of my battery now. I thought I made that clear. The laptop will come on with the battery in, it just won't start Windows. Once Windows has started, it works fine with the battery in. I don't get it.

Does this really kill the battery? I had no idea. This isn't my laptop, it's my grandmother's. I just moved back home, so I'm using it. But I'm pretty sure that she has done this.

No.

If that killed the battery, then no cellphone would ever work. Lithium batteries wear out whether you use them or not. They even wear out if you leave them on the shelf.

It's just /g/ being ricey, and thinking they can get one over on the entire technology industry with just this One Weird Trick.
