if I got a mini pci-e external gpu adapter and upgraded to 8gig ram what video card would be best with said spec? I figure the cpu will bottleneck, maybe a 750ti or is even that overkill? What kinds of games could I run?

See how expensive a gtx660 is now. You can run pretty damn intensive games with it. Definitely all source games maxed, games like hitman maxed, games around the new wolfenstein will start to lag on max.

The 660ti goes for about $100 right now, should be perfect for what you need. Afaik the r9 270 should also work, but I'm less sure of AMD.

ended up pulling the trigger on the r9 270. found one for $90 after a rebate. Dug a little and found a max power consumption of 270-280w would a 300w power supply be cutting it too close?
