Got a new computer today for Christmas. My first time with Windows 10. Started an update earlier. Been stuck on this for just under three hours.

I feel like I should add some clarity to the situation. The screen isn't frozen, the circle thing in the middle is still moving. Also, the Hard Drive Activity Light is still flashing. VERY VERY briefly and only every five seconds or so, but it's flashing. I just don't think I want to force shutdown, but if it is making progress it could take hours!

Meh, just reboot it.
Windows updates are checkpointed, so if the computer crashes during an update, Windows will just roll back to the previous restore point on the next boot.
You can't break anything by rebooting it whilst it's updating.
Reboot it. It won't break anyway.
Install gentoo

If it's a new computer, it's still probably got the RTM build of windows (build 10240)
Current build of Windows 10 is 10586.
Restarting shouldn't be an issue. If need be, turn off your modem if the updates are downloading and installing at the same time, and you have Comcunt interwebs.
