How do you eliminate a funky/nasty smell in shoes?
Wearing different shoes will help. Get running shoes that help your feet breathe instead of cross trainers that keep your feet hot and nasty.

Dryer sheets + baby powder
Cat litter in a stocking (nylon or something)
Baking soda
Dry tea bags

The glue in shoes tends to let go after washing in a washing machine. I glue my shoes on a regular basis so it's not as much of a problem for me though.
Wear new socks and put on foot powder
Place in ziploc bag and freeze overnight.
Also, get a pedicure. 100% George Foreman guarantee to stop your feet from smelling during anything for at least a month. I wear big steel toe, steel sole, steel lace cover boots, 8-12 hours a day. No stink even in summer

Things I have done that work:
-wash them in laundry, medium heat in drier, high can warp them
-spray foot deodorant/antifungal in them, I typically use lotrimin
-leave them in the sun for a day, take out the insoles and let those sit out too for better results
-ALWAYS WEAR CLEAN, DRY SOCKS, my shoes get rank if I dont
