You can always wait for steam sales. Older games like Half-Life and Postal 2 tend to go on sale often and are cheap.
If you like arena shooters, there's Quake Live and the new Unreal Tournament that are free.
I would recommend finding a DLL or torrent for Doom and Doom 2. They can run on any computer and have many, many fanmade mods and level packs.

Warface is also free but you have to pay to get good guns.
