That is how I felt. Super tough to sit through as a 24 year old first timer expecting some serial masterpiece based on all the hype.
The Nephrite stuff showed a little pulse, but the guy is a throwaway character. They should save that stuff for characters who matter. Otherwise, it's like "wtf? melodramaaaaa".
The plot and the explanations start coming in the second half of the first season. It is better than the first half, but I still did not think it was all that great.
I felt done with SM, but a couple weeks later I gave the second season a chance and loved it, because in its first arc they fixed all the things that bugged me about the first season. SM won me over and I watched the rest of the series without any doubt.
So, if you have a similar experience with the first season, I encourage you to give the second season a chance. The writers become aware of what makes SM good.
