which version is this? from the sheer pretentiousness i'd say it must be Lynch. but then again... that's more exposition than all the Lynch films i've seen so far combined. so... what gives?

It's from a tv series called Person of Interest, and it's much better than the likes of Eagle Eye.

That said, it's still a very well made show despite being made for network tv. I'd say give it a chance.

Minimalist Sci-Fi approach with the best A.I. portrayal. It's grounded -- very realistic in that regard.

>that's more exposition than all the Lynch films i've seen so far combined. so... what gives?

Lynch tells you that the beginning is a ver delicate time. The beginning of every movie, of every story. The beginning is decisive. And his beginning is that he tells you so. That is very Lynchian.

>>813653
pretentious doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. but you have to admit, that a lot of stuff with Lynch is deliberately made strange just for the heck of being weird. i really like Mulholland Drive, but i don't deceive myself that the film isn't up its own ass. It's a perfectly coherent movie with strong imagery and good message for the longest time and then Lynch just swaps the two main characters for basically no good reason (which, btw is directly lifted from Bergman's Persona anyway, so it's not even original).

>>814721
eh, i don't disagree with the importance of beginnings. but i did a little reading-up on Dune after posting and it appears that all the voice-over stuff and exposition bullshit was added by the studio against the will of Lynch (who btw disowned the movie). i enjoy being a fanboy just like the next guy, but you should maybe do a little fact checking before white knighting for Lynch on a movie he hates.

I like Dune despite some awkward plot telling. I like it's imagery, it's base story, it's morals and especially baron Harkonnen. The action is mostly lame but it has a unique style. Lynch does not like it? That is his good right. But I enjoyed it thoroughly. And my praise for the opening sentence stands, it's a clever little meta reflection, just a little fun thing.

this is my favourite play adaptation and dark comedy. scratch that - my favourite comedy period. but it's not just the humour - the dark story, the fucked-up characters, the mysterious shrouded backstory are all very intriguing to me. but i realise it's a tough sell, not in the least because having 3 amazing actors does not make up for having 2 god awful actors - especially in a play with only 5 characters...

if anybody has some play adaptations to reccomend, i'd be happy to hear your suggestions. just please no Mamet. i like some of his original screenplays (Ronin, The Untouchables), but i guess i just wholly detest the subject matters and characters he puts into his plays (Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna).

or really just suggest films that are play-like: tiny cast, one location, great characters, snappy dialogue, dark subject matter (insanity, crime), etc. Examples: Hard Candy, Palabras Encadenadas, Surveillance, Coherence...

there's plenty more where that came from. she does deliver a stunning performance indeed.

>>816192
let's get a couple of things out of the way - the acting is stellar, the cast is incredible, the visuals are great. having said that - there is no actual story, no particular arc, the film really goes nowhere. the dialogue is intense, but... i don't know, best i can express it is: the flood of explatives reminds me of Tarantino, but the dialogue here lacks Tarantinos elegance. it is blunt. characters just blabber endlessly. well not quite endlessly, since there are completely pointless shouting matches here and there. and yeah, the big one is definitely the characters. they're assholes. every last one of them. i get that it tries to capture a particular subculture, but man - fuck them all and the horses they rode in on! i have nobody to root for. it might also be too "american" for me. it seems to heavily tie into US culture (rags to riches, american dream, death of a salesman, motivational speeches - that sort of stuff). to me it seems utterly pointless. gangster stories often have a cool-factor, but these characters are just despicable. but i have to admit the film was somewhat capitiving. but when it was over and i stepped back and reflected on it there was just nothing good i could say about the writing.

even though the film lacked a female element sorely, it's probably for the better. Mamet couldn't write a woman if his life depended on it. House of Games and Oleanna made me think he must really hate women actually.

anyway, if i take the whole package of Glengarry Glen Ross i'd have to say i'm neutral. it is really well-made and i don't regret seeing it once. if i just focus on writing and characters - yeah, hate is probably an apt description, though for a good part fuelled by how truly epic this could have been with a better script. waste of a legendary cast i guess :-/

don't tell me they retell the first games from the retconned perspective of WoW... jesus fucking christ....

yeah they were depicted that way in wc1-2 but in wc3 it was explained why and that their original way way shamanism and bullshit so I guess they are trying to cover the full story and not just having 'orc bad human good' storyline. Kinda disappointed they arent depicted more savage but eh.

medivh is in it, he's been cast and is a main character but not in the trailer yet. Karazhan, i think, is at 0:05 of >>819304 and possibly see the back of medivh's head but not sure.

they are sticking mostly with classic lore, I mean wc3 explained how the frostwolves and durotan werent keen on conquering and shit but there's just not enough content from wc1 for a movie.

Also medivh was a antagonist in wc1

You're not a space nerd, that's a pretty huge goof and I have no idea how they could render something like that and not even notice.

Seriously, how does that even happen? I mean it's not like they know about the LEM because it was in the very next shot.

is that supposed to be the YucatƔn impact?

>it hit with the force of 10,000 nuclear weapons

not even close! from wikipedia:
>The Chicxulub impactor had an estimated diameter of 10 km (6.2 mi) and delivered an estimated energy equivalent of 100 teratons of TNT (4.2Ɨ10^23 J). By contrast, the most powerful man-made explosive device ever detonated, the Tsar Bomba, had a yield of only 50 megatons of TNT (2.1Ɨ10^17 J), making the Chicxulub impact 2 million times more powerful.

we're already in the millions of nuclear devices when we talk about the one bomb that was ridiculously more powerful than all the others. so the comparison is more than 2 orders of magnitude off!

even common sense tells you that 10,000 must be way low. puny human technology doesn't even compare to natural phenomena. and i really don't get why they would sell it short for the audience. i don't know the context of the scene, but it seems like they want to hit home that it was crazy powerful. i mean, the visuals might actually show an accurate blast wave, but there's no way to recreate that with even hundreds of thousands of nukes. what were they thinking? better not blow the audience's mind too hard? wtf...

For a movie to work it has to be a different format from a video game. From you post I get the feeling you're a cynical autisc who doesn't like David Bowie.

It's based on the novels, and makes changes to suit a screen based storyline. A screenplay depicting orcs are bad hoomans are good would seen as a terrible movie by anyone who knew their nerd shit.

You'll see, in the coming sequels when Arthas is culling stratholme. You will see.

>Also medivh was a antagonist in wc1
fair enough, i was saying "main protagonist" more in the sense of: central figure of the plot. his heritage, history and ambitions basically drive all of warcraft's lore. i was just surprised he wasn't front and center on all the trailers.

>>826278
>A screenplay depicting orcs are bad hoomans are good would seen as a terrible movie by anyone who knew their nerd shit.

i don't particularly like the movie adaptations, but i don't think Lord of the Rings is all that bad. sometimes staying true to the source, even if it means black/white or good/evil stories is pretty alright actually.

if i'm thinking warcraft, i don't want a character drama with layers. i want war and the craft of said war. orcs were fucking cool. proud mighty alien savages cooperating with goblins and fucking dragons to subdue and pillage a rich human world. for the horde!

and i don't think a movie faithful to the first games would be boring. there is still a lot of plot - backstory, personal drama, deserters and traitors, assassinations, heroes, sieges, alliances to be forged, etc.

i can see why they do it, they want to build a movie franchise. but advertising it as being based on the first game while not admitting that Metzen has bent over backwards and retconned the shit out everything in the meantime just doesn't sit well with me. but it's a sound business decision for sure. there are definitely more wc3 and wow players than wc1 and wc2 enthusiasts.

Bay is a talentless director and all his movies are trash.

You get the feels from this because of the soft violin strings in the background. It's such a stupid trick that even Michael Bay knows it.

Your brain is a wad of play dough. You are an idiot.
>>
>>828360
I agree on Bay being shit, but that clip references to a pretty awesome chapter in history. There is nothing wrong with being stirred by that. Even though US patriotism is disgusting, the amerifats had a really good run in the 20s century.
>>
>>828362
>that clip references to a pretty awesome chapter in history. There is nothing wrong with being stirred by that.

Absolutely, but watch the clip without sound. It's nothing but a chronology of the Apollo 11 mission, as sterile as a bowl of sawdust.

Movies are a visual medium and a movie worth its salt can affect the audience without leaning on music to do the job. There's a reason "Metropolis" still stands up today despite being a silent movie filmed nearly 100 years ago.

My point is not that Apollo 11 was not momentous - it absolutely was - but that Michael Bay has no idea how to use film as a visual medium to affect the audience. He resorts to leaning on music (soft violin strings being the most cliched version of this trick) instead of using the imagery itself. It's so bad that instead of music augmenting the effects of the images, the music is what accounts entirely for the feelings of the audience.
>>

>>828412
like the other guy, i agree that Bay leaves much to be desired. i even agree that he uses cheap tricks to stirr emotions and that it's good to recognise them.

but your argument doesn't make much sense. your opponent isn't talking about the same thing as you. they mean the pleasure of watching an emotional movie while suspending their disbelieve and enjoying the ride. you talk about the intellectual pleasure of analysing a well crafted movie. both are valid ways to approach cinema, but you can't really compare them. being moved and enjoying yourself is a perfectly fine metric to measure a film by. and Bay is successful at this, as his box office numbers repeatedly show. getting off of perfect framing, long takes and subtle use of colour correction is just as fine - but it will return a completely different set of directors as being good at their craft.

apart from missing this point, you also misconstrue film to be a purely visual medium. except that this has almost never been the case (apart from the earliest films, experimental films and early consumer filming in the 60s). film quickly became and has remained ever since an audio-visual medium. i'm sure you can find films that work entirely without audio track, but whole genres simply don't. nearly all well-regarded horror classics, even those with perfect visuals, turn anywhere from bland to goofy if you watch them without music and dialogue. even Metropolis has a score and was always meant to be accompanied by music. it simply doesn't make sense criticising Bay's use of emotional music and citing Metropolis as a reference.

you have valid points, no doubt. but you're straw-manning pretty hard to start a pointless flamewar.

just when i'm thinking to myself "well, this is shit - why would anyone do that to a title sequence?" Gaspar NoƩ's name pops up. oh right. now it all makes sense.

i fucking hate the guy and his obsession with strobe lights and making films deliberately as unpleasant to watch as possible. watch one of them and you've seen them all. hell, spare yourself the waste of time and just watch one of his music videos. it's all in there. the drunk camera, the flashing lights, the gratuitous nudity, the depravity and violence just to be edgy, shooting mere concepts without a proper script at feature length. fuck that guy. whenever i stumble across his shit now i'm just watching it laughing at how hard he tries to be edgier and ediger each year.

the man has certainly found his style, i'll give him that. and maybe someone even had to try it once, so we could all know how much it sucks. so maybe he's a hero of cinema or something... but man, fuck that guy. sorry for the rant, but him and Richard Kelly share the dubious honour of being my least favourite directors of all time.
