You need to understand most of melee fighting you're familiar with from movies or whatever is wrong. Reason why it always ends up in basically some kind of brawling is because these people are actual trying to hit each for real aka they're not hitting the empty air in front of one another. So you want to close in and incapacitate the other guy because you're not being a fencer gentleman or something.

It probably more to do with the fact that unless you're pinpointing armor joints and slits, which they're not because they don't want to kill the other guy, or clubbing them to death bladed weapons aren't exactly useful aside from blunt trauma they can cause through armor. I mean, they're obviously not aiming to kill the other team and I suspect if they were their strategy would be different.

Fighting in full armor is exhausting — even more so in this case as BotN requires exceptionally thick and stifling gear to cut down on serious injuries — so pausing to catch your breath is pretty common. As for why he did it while getting wailed on, could be a combination of being dazed, totally exhausted, or the armor doing its job and the repeated blows being less of an issue than his stamina.

During war they would use 100 pound armor. if they fell to the ground it would be really difficult to get up again without any help. Plus, with all the mess around them, most would die trampled by both enemies and allies.

Falling was actually a serious hazard, trampling was especially bad for those caught up with heavy horse. As for infantry, you were probably more concerned with all the sharp things a peasant could stick you with, since you have to fight gravity to defend yourself.
That said, the big thing they don't have going on here is half swording/ going for weak spots, nor do they have piercing weapons like bills or warhammers, so it's going to look silly.
Interesting point: nobody I've seen is using round or pavise shields: the latter would've saved that one dude's kidneys.
Still better than fencing.
