I have a question for you anime enthusiasts. Why are characters in anime always portrayed as silly, or rather absurd characters that are fairly eccentric.

Now, this isn't uncommon in all forms of media, anywhere around the world, but I can't help but notice how restrained and toned down Japan's culture is compared to everyone else.

Every dresses conservatively, everyone is extremely polite and not exaggerated with their personalities, at least that's what their culture encourages

But then you have all these characters in anime that would be heavily rebuked in Japan and constantly ostracized, yet these characters are loved and created by the Japanese

I dont know, just some thoughts

Anime relies way more heavily on caricatures and archetypes. Anime characters aren't slow, they're dumb as a box of hammers if not outright retarded; they don't have a short temper, they're a raging inferno of anger and tsuntsun; and they don't have an above average libido, they're 1000% baka hentai panty thieves; etc. etc.

As for WHY anime relies so heavily on over-the-top caricatures, hit up /a/ or better yet /jp/. My pet theory has to do with post-WWII cultural reconstruction, how it promoted Old Japan as a way of preserving national pride, and ended up rooting the vast majority of Japanese media forever in 1400s-era writing and characterization.

So how many of you have actually watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, in its entirety? I'm told I'm deprived for not having seen it yet, but I'm curious if that's really true.

I watched the first two episodes probably a month ago, and didn't find it terribly engrossing. But tonight I decided to watch the third episode, and I think I've changed my mind. It actually seems pretty good. I'll probably keep going.
>>
>>1065927
>is Evangelion worth it
There's no real adequate way to answer this question. It's....complicated.

The best course of action is to watch it yourself and form your own opinion. Don't let the internet tell you what your opinion should be, and for fucks sake don't go and ask /a/
>>
>>1065946
I wasn't asking whether it's worth it. I'm planning on watch it. What I was asking is whether it's really a universal among anime fans, the way I've been told it is. In other words, is it something that it would be unusual for an anime fan NOT to have seen?
>>
>>1065955
Not him, but I guess it depends on what you mean by "anime fan." A lot of people who would describe themselves that way probably have watched like 10 shows and think they're experts. I feel like once you've watched a ton of shows or actually have a genuine interest in the medium you'll watch it, even if only because you feel obligated to.

All in all, I'd say it's rather interesting and unique, especially for its time. As for whether it's worth watching, that's up for you to decide.
>>
>>1065955
I guess my suggestion is don't go in expecting it to be the holy grail of anime, because it's not (in my opinion anyway). But don't be surprised if you end up really liking it either, because as >>1065966 mentioned, it's incredibly unique, especially for the time it was made. There really is no other show quite like it, good or bad.
>>
>>1065955
I only recently watched it as well and liked it. You'll definitely see the influence NGE had and as others have said, it's uniqueness helps.
>>
>>1065955
Watch Episodes 1-26

then Watch End of Evangelion, its the "fix" for episode for 26 (you'll see)

You don't need to watch Rebirth because thats just a summarization of episodes 1-26 in a nutshell

You can then watch Rebuild movies 1-3, they're an interesting change up from the original series and offer new looks and new characters to see.

Why, when I try to make a fixed bitrate webm, is the resulting filesize sometimes much larger or smaller than it should be? I thought the filesize is just supposed to be (b:v+b:a)*[duration], but it seems like the margin of error is larger than plus-or-minus 10 percent, sometimes.

>>
It took three fucking attempts to get this piece of shit under 4194304 bytes, and it probably turned out terrible anyway. BRB, committing sudoku.
>>
>>1066078
It's perfectly appropriate. Vinyl fanatics claim that the medium preserves fidelity and nuance better than digital recording. Likewise, variable bitrate fanatics claim that the method preserves definition and texture better than fixed bitrate. The fanatics are probably right in both cases, but noone actually notices or cares, because it doesn't fucking matter.

If your webm very obviously looks like shit, then you did something fundamentally wrong, and variable bitrate wouldn't have saved it.

Variable bitrate is for fucking snobs who have way too much time on their hands.

True, if file size is not a factor.

But when limited to 4mb, variable can make a huge difference.
Especially on longer or more heavily animated clips.
>>
>>1066112
I don't think the difference is big enough to justify the immense amount of extra time required to reencode and reencode until you've got it under filesize. Fixed bitrate offers a small decrease in quality for a HUGE increase in quantity.
>>
>>1066106
>every single torrent of the whole season is either gigantic or has no seeds

Yeah, nah. Not allocating like 7 GB for that shit unless you've got some real persuasive webms.

>Variable bitrate is for fucking snobs who have way too much time on their hands.

if you can't be bothered to train your inner compressor, i forgive you
but if you do switch to variable, you'll soon master the 4mb limit

it also helps to not have a potato cpu and one or two retrys only takes me less than 30 seconds

it is not an "immense" amount of extra time.

Once you get the hang of it you can usually get it right in about 2-3 encodes.

Obviously, helps to have a fast machine.

On longer more complicated clips, (OPs and EDs for example) variable makes a noticable difference. So I think it is worth it.
>>
>>1066134
>Once you get the hang of it you can usually get it right in about 2-3 encodes.

Is the increase in quality worth taking two or three times as long per webm (and thus producing two or three times fewer webms)? I don't think so.

It is worth it on longer clips that you want to look good. Also, you don't have to worry about the clip getting cut off prematurely. The things you were complaining about that started this conversation.

ON short clip yeah just set it to whatever and encode.

Normally, the filesize is always almost exactly (b:v+a:v)*[duration]. But for some reason, on certain rare occasions, it will be skewed from that amount by upwards of 10 percent in either direction. I don't know why.
>>
>>1066404
You don't know anything about compression or keyframes, thats why.

Stop calculating from a filesize and instead focus on acceptable quality first
Sometimes this just isn't possible inside a filesize limit, no matter how good the codec used, de-noising filters applied, or number of passes.
Knowing the exact filesize doesn't help you understand scene compressibility.
>>
>>1066435
>Stop calculating from a filesize and instead focus on acceptable quality first

The max uploadable filesize IS the limit on quality. Whether you're using fixed bitrate, variable bitrate, single or multiple passes, fancy codecs/filters, whatever, there is a cap of 4194304 bytes on submissions to /wsg/, and if you want the best quality, no matter how you make webms, you will try to get as close to that filesize limit as you possibly can.

I use fixed bitrate and single pass, because I'm a busy fucking guy, taking 16 credits in a mad attempt to graduate this semester. I want to be able to pump out a few webms of DECENT quality, during the little free time I have to do so. I do NOT have the time to sit around reencoding and reencoding and reencoding. And even if I did have the time, I probably still wouldn't use any of that fancy stuff, because the SMALL increase in quality does not make up for the HUGE decrease in quantity.

Fixed bitrate, 9 times out of 10, lets me hit my target filesize (4096000 bytes) on the first try. What I want to understand is why, 1 time out of 10, it doesn't. It's called FIXED bitrate. Is that just a misnomer? How does it determine the true bitrate? I want to know these things.

it doesn't because it never will, based on the distance from the last keyframe. Fixed doesn't really mean jack shit, it will try to hit that by cutting duration usually.

keyframes or i-frames are a .jpg of the entire scene and p-frames are just the changes. In other words, if only a mouth is moving, p-frames will be entirely black with just a mouth.

The distance between keyframes is obviously important, and is quite up to the compressor and not your bitrate limits. The variance you're finding is the inability for the file to end(or start) on something other than a keyframe.

And i know the limits. You're hyperbole on quality for VBR is misplaced; it's an increase in efficiency, not quality. In CBR your plane is set at an altitude, mine will hug the ground and only rise at the sight of a mountain.

If yours didn't clear the mountain, it will still look shitty, and if mine pulls up higher than the bitrate limit, i can't upload it.

Either he patched it, it happens rarely, you don't use WFR, or it still happens in command line ffmpeg but just not your particular build

But when i still used cbr in wfr it would cut off the end by whatever duration was necessary to meet the filesize limit i had set, which made me switch to using vbr
quite glad i did really

if you stick with cbr you'll rolling the dice on quality for any given scene
kind of an injustice to the show itself

Fuckin' lost. Please tell me this was you, anon.
>>
>>1067586
Nope, editing wikipedia sounds boring as fuck desu

I just watched or rather listened to a lot of japanese ear linking and whispering ASMR from the h-audio thread on /h/ recently and that scene instantly triggered the sensations
>>
>>1067586
>>1067587
Oh man, oh man, guys, check out the talk page. There's a bunch of crazies treating it like it's some kind of goddamned religious experience, and getting INSANELY mad at contributors who don't have it and are skeptical about it.

>I love to find a WP page that makes me laugh. Non-science or maybe-science-maybe-silly is a worthwhile category!
>Well, that's incredibly rude and ignorant. To not believe in something with strong anecdotal evidence but scientifically unproven is one thing, but to brush it off as silly is condescending and an insult to those of us who actually experience this. Between this and the assertion by higher ups on this site that ASMR is some sort of elaborate hoax that the internet at large is conjuring up, I wonder why anyone even bothers making an article on this. We ASMR folk certainly have nothing to prove to anyone and should just let people wallow in their self-imposed ignorance, in my opinion. Not a forum, I know, but people really should stick to adding something constructive to the topic and keep their backhanded comments to themselves. Though it's only a matter of time before some self-righteous Wikiloser with an agenda comes along to try and trash this iteration of the article too.
>Well, you're a crybaby dipshit. Anecdotal "evidence" isn't evidence, and neither is a burgeoning "scene" on some social media web site. Mushrooms burgeon, and their source is what? Total shit. "[T]hose of [you] who actually experience this" will have to do better than 'Waah, a bunch of people including me claim to experience this, so stop oppressing our freedom to be taken seriously on the basis of unvalidated self-reports probably propped up by the bandwagon fallacy and confirmation bias'. Until there's robust scientific research on the topic, ASRM is no less silly than talking snakes and body thetans, so stop acting so emotionally traumatized when people see no good reason to take it seriously.
>>
>>1067596
This one is the best, desu.
>It's definitely real. And it feels amazing. Honestly who cares what those who lack the ability think because it's an amazing gift for those of us who can experience. It's better than opiates!

There're some other fucking gems in here.
>As someone who is very firmly atheistic and who has multiple bookshelves full of anatomy, neurology, and physiology textbooks which I do read, I not only very much get this sensation from many of the stimuli presented by the ASMR community, I find it to be one of the most pleasurable sensations next to sex.

Lol, fucking whut?
>I believe the article is quite clear that there has been no serious known neurological research into this subject, though I would bet a good $50 that the CIA probably played around with it during the MKULTRA years.

FUCKING
GOLD
>I agree this article is ridiculous. I also think the article on tickling is ridiculous. People who claim to be "ticklish" are obviously lying. I have had people try to tickle me and it didn't work, so it's garbage psuedo-science. Also the idea of emotions is garbage, since they can't be tested. Same with thoughts. And consciousness. Purely subjective claptrap. I'm glad we've sorted that.
>>
>>1067603
>Hi, infrequent contributor to neuroscience, immunology, and physiology articles. ASMR drives me nuts with tingles. I just sent $20 to a random person on the internet who makes the videos because they're so pleasurable. Nobody is hoaxing anyone and do you really think there'd be that many people out there flocking in the hundreds of thousands to watch these videos just because they're trying to play a game with you? Tough luck that you can't feel it though, it's the 2nd most pleasurable sensory experience to sex imo.

I'm seriously laughing my ass off, here.

I particularly like the people who are vehemently insisting that ASMR is DEFINITELY NOT the same thing as goosebumps / spine tingling, and DEFINITELY deserves its own article separate from, say, "frisson".
>>
>>1067614
They are right that its different sensations from spinetingling/goosebumps and maybe even frision cause you feel ASMR when something triggers it (like japanese ear licking binaural h-audio) as a kind of pressure in the middle of your forehead, and depending on how strong it is it can even feel tingly a little there too, I even got the forehead sensation now just typing this out, interesting.

Whereas frision is sort of felt all over or in the center of your body or core, while ASMR is felt in the center of the forehead primarily.

Funny to see drama and shit about it though but thats wikipedia/autists for you.
>>
>>1066695
Not sure if cute or lewd.
>>
>>1067636
>Whereas frision is sort of felt all over or in the center of your body or core, while ASMR is felt in the center of the forehead primarily.

This is not what the people in that thread are saying. They're saying it's on the back of the head, down the spine, and out along the limbs. In other words, exactly like a frisson, just more intense.
>>
>>1067643
I dunno I only feel it in the center of the forehead really, they could be exagerating or they have stronger ASMR response than me maybe whatever

WfR cannot do that.

You will need a video editing program to join clips and create a fade effect.

Then reencode the whole thing as a webm.

i have only ever joined different clips.
I use Mkvnix which is only for simple editing stuff.
I don't think it does effects though.

I would also like a recommendation on a more advanced free video editing software. Doesn't need to be pro quality and capable of 3d effects.

Anyone?

I use virtualdub, it's kinda old but it works. You need a plugin to make it capable of handling new audio/video codecs.

http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

http://codecpack.co/download/FFInputDriver.html
>>
>>1068421
Also be aware it really sucks at making gifs and encoding video. When you're done working on a video you should save the video as raw audio/video(save as AVI) or if you want to save individual frames use export>image sequence. Don't try to export a gif, virtualdub really sucks at making them.
